Geez I couldn't get into this book. It was written journal style which made it way more difficult to connect with Lauren (I never actually felt like I DID connect with her character), I couldn't get behind the Earthseed religion (it just felt way too unnecessary and like it was added either for shock factor or as an excuse of a motive), and the slow pace of the story just lost me. Honestly I was way more interested in the backgrounds of the side characters than anything that actually happened in this story. Knowing that this was pretty much written in response of the LA riots makes more sense and helped put it in better perspective for me but I couldn't get over the entitled attitude of Lauren and how she seemed unable to empathize with anyone, especially when she seemed to look down on and blame the poor for being dirty and poor. Like, what???Geez I couldn't get into this book. I read this for class and I'll be honest. For the first 80 pages I couldn't stand it. I felt like I couldn't connect with Luz, I couldn't tell where the story was going and I was bored. And then, it all changed and it sucked me in. Suddenly I felt trapped in this world almost as much as Luz, and I needed to know more. The concepts of control were profound; of control over the environment, over society, over self. It was just amazing. My recommendation: if you want to pick up this book, please give it at least 150 pages before you decide whether or not you want to finish it. I want to recommend this book indefinitely.
I read this in a college class and I loved it. I thought it was so well written, so intriguing and insightful. Then my class began to discuss it and I realized how much I had missed in my initial reading. And I loved it all the more because of how it left me in awe. It's hard for me to even write a review because I have so many feelings and thoughts about this book I would have a very difficult time writing them all down. I was just left thoroughly amazing.I want to recommend this book indefinitely.

Woah, um okay this book should DEFINITELY have a sequel and I am actually very upset that it DOESN'T. If you are not okay with ambiguous endings then don't read this. Otherwise this was a very good book. It took me a while to fully grasp the jargon and understand what was happening but once I did I jumped into the story and became invested. It was really well done and you could see the amount of hard work and knowledge that went into the research of this book before it was published. I just wish there was more.Woah, um okay this book should DEFINITELY have a sequel and I am actually very upset that it DOESN'T. If you are not okay with ambiguous endings then don't read this. Fantastic. That's all I can say.
Yes this book was graphic but it used the dark and twisted themes to amplify its meaning and its importance. I was not expecting the interplay between self-identifying as something monstrous as a coping mechanism, prostitution, the Holocaust and life of Jews in Germany just before World War 2, death and sickness, and childhood perspectives. This was masterfully done and I artfully drawn and I would say anyone who can stomach the scenes and intensity of this book should read it. For sure.Fantastic. That's all I can say.

This compilation of short stories were pretty profound.
I walked away feeling like they all revolved around the pursuit of knowledge and the issue of tackling the unknown unknowns of this world, how you can't predict the consequences of your actions, and how people will react differently to new discoveries. Very neat, though sometimes I had a hard time keeping track of the story but oh well. This compilation of short stories were pretty profound.

This book was intense, dark, amazing, disturbing and perplexing. I enjoyed reading this book so much but still feel deeply freaked out by it. The themes revolving around childhood memory, the creepy fascination with horror and death around kids, the twist on the trope of falling in to a new, hidden world filled with magic and self-discovery. It simply is amazing. This story was under 300 pages, and didn't even give a name to the main character and yet it has buried into my heart ever since I finished it and continues to disturb me.
I would highly recommend, whether you enjoy horror, fantasy, children's books or other genres, I think this book is too fantastic to overlook. This book was intense, dark, amazing, disturbing and perplexing. Julie Kagawa's books were my favorite in high school so I knew I wanted to read this series, but I have pushed it off until the series was fully written (so I could binge them all). I will admit it was a risk- the style of reading I thoroughly enjoyed in high school has since subtly changed. So I was very excited to realize that, even though I started this book with reservations, I was quickly and deeply wrapped up in this story and the well-being of these characters. I had a hard time putting it down, it was just so relaxingly page-turning that I was spending hours with this book without realizing it. It was great!
With a book on shape-shifting dragons, I was expecting some cheesy high school drama intensity, and while there was a little of that, it was WAY less than I expected and I found myself truly rooting for Ember. I'm very excited for the rest of this series, to see just where it will lead.Julie Kagawa's books were my favorite in high school so I knew I wanted to read this series, but I have pushed it off until the series was fully written (so I could binge them all). This book was alright, a bit of a wild rollercoaster with a lot of action and things happening all the time. However, I think I've been spoiled recently on some other books I've been reading and just had a very difficult time being able to connect with the characters and emotionally engage in this story.
BUT! For a vampire based book, this one wasn't bad. I'd maybe rate it just slightly under Julie Kagawa's series 'The Blood of Eden' but it was still fairly good! This book was alright, a bit of a wild rollercoaster with a lot of action and things happening all the time. This book provides a great way to open a reader's eyes and heart to the troubles, horrors, and pain that illegal immigrants face trying to find a better life, for themselves and their families. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone interested in or even just curious about the topic. My sister begged me to read this book and I gotta say it blew me away. I may have even liked it more than the Grisha trilogy. I devoured this book in about three hours. It was a quick, easy read that brought to light many identity, racial, and grief issues. I honestly think it would be a good book for just about any high school kid to have read. Some of Junior's reactions to things caught me off guard, but it's hard to judge when the life experience and perspective he presents is so vastly different from my own.
It is written like a diary, with drawings and a more personal tone that reminds me a bit of Catcher in the Rye, so some of the big events in Juniors' life were presented not necessarily in a way other books would present them- they were just relayed through Juniors' point of view.

A good conclusion to this series, though it definitely was more difficult for me to keep my attention focused on it. I just think I miss the main Percy Jackson series too much but that's not exactly something I should hold against these books.
I thought the story was clever, wonderfully random, and flashy, but maybe not all-together life-changing or super memorable, based on other books I've read (some by Rick Riordan).

Woah. I've been blindsided.
I wasn't sure about starting this book, I loved Caraval so much and reading from Scarlett's perspective that reading from Tella's view didn't appeal to me. I had a bit of an airhead vibe from her in the first book and expected this book to continue reflecting that, but I did what everyone does with Tella- I underestimated her. She was much stronger, reckless and determined than I thought she was going to be. And the magic of Caraval, though definitely changed and not quite so eye-catching, was still present. I gotta say, I'm loving how these books are stringing me along and making me second guess everything. The ending of this book left me panicking before gasping in relief that a third one will be made. The story is just amazingly brought to life and I'm so excited to see where it leads next.Woah. I've been blindsided.

This book was so unexpected. My copy didn't have a summary on the back so I started this with no prior knowledge of the storyline or narrator. All I knew was that this book is widely regarded as a classic in literature, so I was totally taken aback by the personal, 1st-person, journal-style writing of teen angst and self-wondering. I couldn't predict Holden and what he would do next, which kept my attention, even as the mundane issues he had with normal human behavior rubbed him the wrong way. This book sort of made me think deeper on the actions and reactions I and others around me tend to have, looking at them from a 'phonier' perspective.

This book was a trip; is it really meant for kids? Cause honestly, the first half sucked me in into a crazy adventure and the second half was full of deep ideas on identity and life.
I enjoyed it and couldn't predict where each chapter was going. There were times I was like why am I reading this but the end and looking back at the story made it all worth it. It is a pretty good classic, an epic tale on self-acceptance and discovery and I liked how it made me think about myself.

This book was a trip. I'm just stunned right now, not sure how to think or deal with it.
The pace was good and kept me hooked and thinking about what could be happening, but the last 100 pages were simply frustrating trying to read through as two theories were pretty much just punted back and forth so fast I got whiplash. The last couple chapters left me in shock and contemplation for days, yet I felt like it was a bit rushed at the end and I was disappointed by that.
