I've been reading this book for six months. Each time that I go back to it, (I read British suspense in between) I learn a great deal about the craft of writing from Donna Tartt.

This is a page turner that is sad, mysterious, and full of irony. The reader will struggle with their feelings for Rosa, the protagonist. She does and says the unspeakable.

Enjoyed the book. Loved Major Pettigrew's bravery in life, as well as his blunt presentation towards his son. Little details make it clear that the narrator is a woman, and that's okay. The chaotic ending reminded me of Zadie Smith's formula. Lastly, and this is silly - I saw Jim Broadbent as Major Pettigrew. Masterpiece Theater is calling!Enjoyed the book. It's my favorite movie. As with most Almodovar films, there's a plot twist/mystery. The film is beautiful to look at, especially the dance and music.

I love the thoughts of Barbara Pym's characters in this book. It's that simple.

I just thought it would be a more thoughtfully written book, which for me means the prose is memorable. I felt no need to reread anything or analyze anything except for the Kim/George situation, of which I'm still confused. The trip back to Bangladesh was a blur of too many characters, but maybe this is what a homecoming is - convoluted.I just thought it would be a more thoughtfully written book, which for me means the prose is memorable. I loved this book because Adichie discussed topics (race/gender/class) that most people, especially women from the American South, I dare say, are reluctant to discuss - even in 2013. There is an irony that is somewhat frustrating in this epic love story. We do not love the main characters any less because of the decisions they make.

The only reason why I am continuing to read this book is to get to the bottom of Edie's compulsive eating. Unfortunately, Robin is not very likable - if that is what Attenberg intended.

This book is narrated by women and men in Coetzee's life via personal interviews, yet written by Coetzee. Coetzee is a complex character in this novel, as no one can reach his core. Is he a reliable narrator? I found myself amazed at Coetzee's ability to be introspective. At the same time, it's sad, because Coetzee is so misunderstood, yet near the end, one of his characters (who is Coetzee writing as a former lover/colleague) gives us insight into Coetzee's thinking. Incredibly humbling, and I doubt that many authors would be able to pull this off. I loved it! We all just want the author to find love and passion in someone or something. This book is narrated by women and men in Coetzee's life via personal interviews, yet written by Coetzee. I wanted to read this novel because it's nominated for the Booker Prize, and the library owned it. Each character has a bleak existence, sadly because of the men in their lives. Certain details were left out, but maybe this was intentional. At any rate, NDiaye creates characters that we all know in some shape or form.I wanted to read this novel because it's nominated for the Booker Prize, and the library owned it. One of Barbara Vine's best novels! Evocative of Wilkie Collins, and should be made into a Masterpiece Theater.

Bought this book at the famous City Lights bookstore in San Francisco. Great storytelling. The characters are well-developed, and their stories are tragic, yet remarkable. Austin Public Library needs to secure more books from this author.
