On p. 90. I always find Ian McEwan's books so easy to get into. I love his writing - always writing down particularly good sentences. I lived a similar life to Serena's in London (many years later!) so perhaps that's why I'm enjoying it so much. London had changed a lot by the time I lived in my bedsit but, in a way, London never changes. I'm very impressed with McEwan writing as a young woman - I can't remember if he's done this before? When I heard that both Martin Amis and Ian McEwan had books coming out in the autumn I wondered if they'd each dedicate their book to CH. They have. So no Afterlife, but there's literary afterlife. On p. 90. I always find Ian McEwan's books so easy to get into. I love his writing - always writing down particularly good sentences. Martin Amis. 5 stars. Always. Anything Martin Amis writes is so much better than just about every other writer. I wonder how readers who aren't familiar with London accents will feel about this book. I'm not saying you have to know about the really gritty working-class accent in order to read the book but, for me, a lot of the comedy (and for Des) comes from the awful (and absolutely spot-on) way Lionel mangles the English language. Martin (and Kingsley) Amis has the best ear for phonetic pronunciation - amazing. I picked up the references to Dickens, Fielding and Larkin (there are probably lots of others) but this has always been the state of England - ghastly, sordid, violent, squalid but still wonderful, historical, literary and inspiring.Martin Amis. 5 stars. Without exaggeration, I think Arkady Renko is one of the great characters, certainly one of the great detectives (sorry, 'inspector') in literature. I'm never disappointed with a Renko book. The character just becomes more and more interesting, but I do understand the comments made on Sep. 6, Jul 19 and Jul 4. I'd very much like to know from Pisinga what the untruths about Russians are? Seriously. I'm not Russian, don't know any Russians, and have never been there; but these books have always seemed so truthful and accurate to me: I feel 'Russia MUST be like this. Russians must be as he describes them.' Where has Martin Cruz Smith gone wrong?Without exaggeration, I think Arkady Renko is one of the great characters, certainly one of the great detectives (sorry, 'inspector') in literature. This book seriously needs a good editor; or needs a seriously good editor. The typos, errors in grammar, syntax, tense, etc. etc. made it impossible for me to enjoy this, and I love Mr. Darcy!

This was a great treat. It's the best James Bond book not written by Ian Fleming, but it's also perfectly read by Toby Stephens. I hope Jeffrey Deaver will write more Bond books and that Toby Stephens will read them.
