A lovely bedtime story. Beautiful illustrations and a cute little poem to go along with them. I can imagine studying the images and using imagination to go beyond the story. Just as expected with a Winfield Martin book.

I added an extra half because I felt that it was a unique concept. A great way to introduce children to poetry with cute pictures.

I have been going through all of the Author's books because the illustrations are so beautiful. This was the first chapter book I've read by her though. It was an ok story. I bumped it up to 3.5 because of the illustrations. This would be a fabulous read together bedtime book. I would say it's for mid range elementary school kids. 7ish? I'm not a huge fairy tale type but that's what it is. I would recommend it for adults to read with children.I have been going through all of the Author's books because the illustrations are so beautiful. I picked this book up as a Canada Reads book. It's not something that I would usually read. I really enjoyed it and it expanded my reading horizons. A lot of people are commenting on the politics of the book but I am a leftist so it's right up my alley. The stories are VERY relevant to 2020. It's interesting as the book was published last year. I enjoyed that it was 4 short stories. A pretty easy read I got through it on a (long) weekend.I picked this book up as a Canada Reads book. It's not something that I would usually read. Wow, wow, wowza. That book was a SLOG. I hated it by the end because it took so long for me to read. I had to re-new it at the library. I took it out because I LOVED City of Girls. I did not care for Eat Pray Love. So... I don't know, am I a Gilbert fan. Tihs book was boring, then good, then boring, then good and so on. I liked the writing it is just that Alma is SO BORING. My own prejudice is that I DO enjoy a book where the character is happy. It was almost depressing. Blaaaaah.Wow, wow, wowza. That book was a SLOG. I picked it up because it is part of the Youth summer reading survivor series at my library. I didn't find that this book was at all refreshing or told a new story. I almost feel like it doesn't respect the level of intelligence of teens. There are so many elements that could have been dug into deeper. It was a very shallow read. I liked the short chapters. They kept me interested. Just Lucky is Just OK.I picked it up because it is part of the Youth summer reading survivor series at my library. I am not typically a reader of poetry. I think that I saw this suggested on my library's website and decided to read it. I enjoyed the powerful messages and illustrations. It was a lovely collection of poetry. I would recommend it to young women as an introduction to poetry. And women in general. I think it captures a wide range of experiences and some of the pieces felt deeply personal. I read the electronic version and some of the images were cut off.I am not typically a reader of poetry. I know, I just blasted another book for being TOO magical. The difference is, I was EXPECTING this one to be fanciful. I quite enjoyed it. I read this for my Popsugar reading challenge. Immediately following this review I will be placing a hold on the next book. I got through this bad boy very quickly. I do like YA for that. I won't ever re-read this book but liked the style enough to read another! I would recommend this book to YA fantasy fans.I know, I just blasted another book for being TOO magical. I picked up this book upon recommendation. It was ok, thus 3 stars. I am not good with mysticism so would not likely have ever adored this book. It was a bit of a slog for me. I definitely could put it down. It was an interesting concept but my Virgo mind struggles with "the fantastic" as it were. I don't think that I will recommend this book to anyone and will likely forget I've read it among the many other stellar titles that I have read of late.I picked up this book upon recommendation. This book was recommended to me by a friend and am I ever glad that she did! You know I've enjoyed the book if I finish it and read the acknowledgements and author bio. I loved Vivian with my whole heart. What a unique character! I laughed and I cried reading this book. I did not know that the author wrote Eat, Pray, Love and I think I am glad that I didn't as it may have coloured my perception of the book. I really really enjoyed it and would recommend it to any feminist historical fiction readers out there. This book was recommended to me by a friend and am I ever glad that she did! I won this book 4 years ago as an ARC and just got around to reading it. I enjoyed it so much. It was just what I needed. A great summer read that took me back to my summers as a teenager. I liked all of the characters. I was invested in all of their stories and could relate. It was a light read that made me nostalgic. It was pretty predictable but I expected that. I REALLY liked it and will share it with some of my high school girlfriends. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a light YA summer read. I will also take a look at some of the author's other books.I won this book 4 years ago as an ARC and just got around to reading it. I enjoyed it so much. It was just what I needed. It's a story. Was it memorable, not really. Did I hate it? No. I didn't like any of the characters. I'm not sure if that was intentional or not. The book explores some interesting concepts but, superficially. It would make a decent bookclub read as it it short and offers a lot for discussion. It's a story. Was it memorable, not really. I started the year by reading The Hate U Give and accidentally bought a boxed set that included On the Come Up. I didn't really have any desire to read it. It was a solid story but I couldn't help but compare it to THUG which I LOVED. So as a standalone book yes it gave me all the feels but I wasn't as invested in the characters, lacked subtleties and didn't carry the same urgency with it. I think it's a great book for teens, especially those who aren't so into reading. I would recommend it to others. I won't read it again but I also won't forget it. I unexpectedly enjoyed this book. I thought it would read more like a textbook but it truly was a narrative. I found Obama's writing easy to digest and genuine. I also have to applaud her for the epilogue. I don't follow politics closely, especially American politics. This wasn't so much about that though but life. Michelle has a strong voice as a woman, a woman of colour, a mother among other lenses. I laughed, I cried and I felt hopeful. I would recommend this book to anyone. Especially white men. The only reason that I took a half star off is that I won't re-read this book.I unexpectedly enjoyed this book. I thought it would read more like a textbook but it truly was a narrative.
