I really liked this film. From the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Philip Roth, the "Pastoral" in the title for me is more for the meditative, trance-like state it put me in, rather than a geographical location.

I don't usually like to waste my time on negative reviews. Here, I will make an exception.
What a disappointment!
If you haven't seen this story yet, skip this one and see the 1974 theatrical release instead. More drama, less fluff; less 1/2 second attention span.
Note to the filmmakers: a lot of quick cuts and allusions to the glamourous good life do not equal repeated viewings.I don't usually like to waste my time on negative reviews. Here, I will make an exception.

This is an important historical document of a vibrant jazz hang-out scene in New York. There's an essential documentation of Thelonius Monk's collaboration with a famous arranger(?) in preparation for his Carnegie Hall performance with John Coltrane. Great fly on the wall stuff! Kudos to the filmmakers who went through tons of documentation from the "eccentric" photographer who tape-recorded and photographed so much. This is an important historical document of a vibrant jazz hang-out scene in New York. I really like this series. So far have seen series 1-3 of five. As any series, watching in sequence is best...
What I like:
1. Interesting characters with good mutual chemistry; good acting and dialogue.
2. Good stories. Fascinating situational drama that tells you about what the federal witness protection program is like - so many variables.
3. Good, comparatively low violence stories about a lot of different types of crime. And

This is a biopic. Wonderful!
Remember those "gay porno" erotic black and white drawings?
They are kind of ubiquitous images. To the casual observer, these might seem a subversion or perversion of the male ideal. Well guess what? As seen here they were an empowering cultural phenomenon that freed gay men from negative stereotypes as fey, helpless victims... To me, very convincing and believable. The popularity of the drawings made so much more sense to me after seeing this. This is a biopic. Wonderful!

"...one of the greatest untold stories in rock." How two stifled, impatient young film auteurs (Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp) set a plan in motion to express their ideas and make their mark - and wound up helping to shape, nurture and launch one of the greatest bands ever. They became the Who's managers. Their vision contributed to a creative, artistic alchemy. The making of this film brings their plan of so long ago full circle. Kudos to all concerned.
Director James Cooper calls it "...a fabulous 'love story' between two people who shouldn't have been together. And it's a story about risking relationship with another person in order to find a greater depth to yourself." His vision for the film was as a living, ongoing entity.
There are so many good, inspiring ideas in the film, in the director's commentary, and in a bonus dialogue between Henry Rollins and the director. Pete Townshend has always been one of the most articulate, cerebral figures in rock - here we see that in action and see some of his formative influences.
It's a complex, compelling story of relationships: between the two managers; and between the Who and the two managers. The managers' original conceptual approach outlined herein is revelatory. It was intuited; yet with a philosophy behind it.
The film was painstakingly put together over ten years' time. All the rough edges are not hewn off. A lot of emotion is still present.
Fascinating. Audacious and outrageous. A must-see for anyone interested in that whole English (or European) post-war youth generation that spawned cultural, artstic and musical super-novas. Lots of historical footage of the Mods within context.
So glad I found this in my local library's 'recommended' section, just wanted to get the good word out!"...one of the greatest untold stories in rock." How two stifled, impatient young film auteurs (Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp) set a plan in motion to express their ideas and make their mark - and wound up helping to shape, nurture and launch one of…
