After his death, it's revealed to the world that the famous male trumpet player Joss Moody turns out to have been female. Mostly a novel about the way his son grapples with this truth, the story is told through everyone's voice except for the deceased (save a few slightly-redeeming pages). The son's journey toward understanding his father is painful to read, but also somewhat powerful. Overall the book fell short of moving me, even felt frustrating at times, but was an interesting read. After his death, it's revealed to the world that the famous male trumpet player Joss Moody turns out to have been female. This book was such a sweet and swift read. The author does an incredible job of capturing the thoughts of a 10.5 year old, and telling a story of belonging and letting go. It would be a wonderful book to use in a 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade classroom.

I loved this book! It was compelling on many levels. I liked the character developments and the curious connections amongst them, and I found the plot's twists and turns particularly engaging. I liked the magical realism and didn't find it hokey or hard to believe. I think Niffenegger wove an interesting story. I definitely recommend reading this one!I loved this book! I loved this book. I like that it addressed the relationship between Japanese Americans and Native Americans during the internment. Sumiko's friendship with Frank was a powerful example of allyship and making connections across differences. I loved the characters in this book, from her Tak-Tak to Jiachan, I thought each one was thoughtfully developed. A great book I definitely plan on using in my future classrooms!I loved this book. I loved the conceptual themes in this book. I thought the author could have developed the main character more fully and deeply. I never felt totally hooked by her struggles, feeling like something was missing from her. All in all, I am excited to discuss the themes in this book with my students!I loved the conceptual themes in this book. I liked this book, despite its dark nature! Thought that the characters were all interesting and quirky and I enjoyed watching them develop as their family drama unfolded. It left me feeling heavy, but I think the story was compelling, at times mythical and dream-like.I liked this book, despite its dark nature! Durrow's novel explored the life of a young, mixed-race, bi-cultural girl who survived an event that took the life of her mom and two siblings. The only survivor, she moved in to her grandmother's house, navigating new cultures and customs, and finding her way in a new place. Reading this book was like walking in the dark and peering into houses whose lights were on, but whose curtains were drawn and only slightly parted. Details emerged slowly and effortfully, and I never felt like I was fully entering the house of the story.Durrow's novel explored the life of a young, mixed-race, bi-cultural girl who survived an event that took the life of her mom and two siblings.
