This was an enthralling re-imagining of a Jewish state and a young heroine who wished to defend her homeland. The characters and the fantastical mechanical 'inventions' keep the plot moving swiftly.

I agree with amukhrj. This book was stunning in its abilitiy to hold me in thrall through page after page. It has been one of the best books I've read in the last three or four years, in terms of a quite unique plot line, suspense, and excellently described, poignant characters. At different times in during the day I would find myself wondering "What's coming around the corner next?" in the book waiting for me!I agree with amukhrj. I believe that the comments by Lauren31 described this book best.
And women who have experienced the embarrassments and frustrations that come with being thrust into a cabin with other strange girls by going to a Camp Fire or Girl Scouts camp in the woods will certainly be able to relate to some of the experiences of the main character, Thea.

A virtual extravaganza of memorable characters, and seething with descriptions of the intolerably hot, swampy lands of the South that slaves were forced to toil on.
This book has something for everyone, but particularly for women willing to commit to the long-term goal of freedom from the mental and physical abuse of ownership, rather than the short-term goal of 'favors' from the Master.
This is one of the few books which underscores the beauty of being a dark girl.A virtual extravaganza of memorable characters, and seething with descriptions of the intolerably hot, swampy lands of the South that slaves were forced to toil on.
