Herbalist apprentice Reveka, anxious to have enough money to enter a convent and start her own herbary, dreams of freeing 12 largely ungrateful Romanian princesses from their curse. A mysterious prince in shadows, a mouthbreathing cowherd, a faithful herbwife, and a witchy bath attendant round out this retelling first of the 12 dancing princesses then beauty and the beast.Herbalist apprentice Reveka, anxious to have enough money to enter a convent and start her own herbary, dreams of freeing 12 largely ungrateful Romanian princesses from their curse. Happily for this reader, Tao Nyeu's water-based silkscreens in orange, aqua, green, and yellow owe a lot to Richard Scarry. There are asides, visual jokes, and more than anything an overwhelming sense of joy and connection in these 4 short stories. As the back of the book says, "Life is full of fun when you share it with a friend." Check out some of the art here: http://www.taonyeu.com/v2/projects/squid-octopus-friends-for-always/.Happily for this reader, Tao Nyeu's water-based silkscreens in orange, aqua, green, and yellow owe a lot to Richard Scarry. In A Home for Bird, a scavenging toad named Vernon finds lost a cuckoo clock bird and helps him find his home. A Caldecott Winner for A Sick Day for Amos McGee, Philip C. Stead layers water soluble crayons with goauche to create the warm, generous illustrations that reward slow reading.

Fantastic Dutch illustrated children's book by Philip Hopman about the supremely confident but musically benighted Valentine. Hopman's loose, rhythmic watercolors are tons of fun and witty with Where's Waldo style payoff for extended gazing. Highly recommended.

Translated from Spanish, Sonja Wimmer's The Word Collector is a children's book for adults in both design and content. Wimmer's words spiral and corkscrew like the red hair of her heroine, a young girl who lives in the sky and collects beautiful, strange, important, crazy, and admirable words.
This layout fits the subject material and demands the reader spend time with the work. Though don't worry, the book has the text as plain text appended at the end as well.Translated from Spanish, Sonja Wimmer's The Word Collector is a children's book for adults in both design and content. Great read aloud with a strong sense of place from northern writer Mowat. Humorous tales of raising two owls in the high prairie town of Saskatoon as a youth.
