I enjoyed this book. Hig is a relatable protagonist and I love his relationship with his dog. I listened to the audiobook and the narrator does a great job.

In contrast to the review below, I did not enjoy the first third of this book with its many scenes of violence. However, I devoured and sincerely enjoyed the last two thirds which centered on human connection.

I'd say it starts out as a 4.5 and tapers off at the end to a 3.5. So 4 stars overall.

One of my absolute favorite books of all time. I wish Peter Heller would write more fiction.

I LOVED LOVED LOVED THE DOG STARS! THE DOG STARS is haunting and beautiful. It is an extremely satisfying dystopian novel, that drew me in bit by bit until I was mesmerized. It is one of those books that gets better and better until you…

This book was deeply moving to me. It is an environmental dystopian that follows a man and his dog after the end of civilization. It takes place in the near future, at an air hangar in Colorado. Peter Heller has a unique writing style…

Listening to this end-of-times survivalist story during the unknowns of the COVID epidemic was haunting and this book stuck with me long after I finished it. Great narrator, great characterization; great love scenes. I was willing to…

Author Peter Heller has crafted believable, deeply-damaged characters that still elicit sympathy from readers, in spite of the cold-blooded killing required for them to safely exist in a dangerous world. The story shifts from beautifully…

Interesting apocalypse story of an epidemic that has wiped out about 98% of the population. Main character lives on an acreage with one other survivor and they share patrol duties to fend off mauraders. He is a lonely pilot with a small…

Phenomenal book with a complex development of characters and a profound message of hope and relationships in an apocalyptic world. The characters are so well developed, even the ones that seem stereotypical are revealed to have more layers…

If you don't already treasure our beautiful planet you will after reading this post-apocalypse story narrated by a man who longs for the lush forests, cold streams, and healthy trout of the time before.

I read enough dystopia and thought that between The Road and Blindness it had all been said, but then Heller does something fresh. I liked the stream of consciousness-type writing and the truncated sentencing, I liked the protagonist Big…

I re-read this story of post-apocalyptic America told in poetic, fragmented prose to refresh my memory. Yes, I still like this book – because of and in spite of Heller’s unique style. Oddly, the love scenes did not resonate, but the love…

I've tried this twice, once as a print book, next as the audio read by a generally good voice. It must be the writer's intent to pace this & to have it read as two or three words at a time, like one is reading to a 4 year old child. I…

Do not let the guns and gore steer you away from this exceptional post-apocalyptic tale of a world trying to make a comeback from a flu pandemic. A man (Hig) hears a radio transmission. He know there are other people alive somewhere…

Excellent story. Writing is a bit ragged and hard to get use to. Probably should read a second time to pick up the nuances. Would recommend the book.

Other readers have a LOT to say. There is not too much that I can add to those wonderful appraisals. I have not enjoyed a book this much in a long time. It is very different than most apocalyptic books. This is the story of the human…

Interesting that I saw others say they enjoyed the first 200 pages or so - that part of the book was, to me, a slow slog that could have easily been half its length. It boils down to a cycle of 1) something bad happens, 2) main character…

I read a lot of futuristic dystopian books and loved this one. Heller takes his time developing multi-layered characters and by the end of the book I was heavily invested in them. Terrific suspense and action as well.

The author fluidly assesses the intrinsic worth of a person's life and the accompanying notion of when is living worthwhile. The Dog Stars reads as an individual's (Hig's) daily profit and loss ledger statement, presented in the form of a…

A heartbreaking post-apocalyptic novel written by a poet. No seriously! Poet and adventurer! And it's easily the most beautiful prose I have read in a long, long time. The voice Heller installs in his protagonist Hig is one of a man with…

If Hemingway had written a post-apocalyptic novel, I think it would’ve looked very similar to The Dog Stars. Our protagonist, Hig, is built from the same mold as Nick Adams. He likes the outdoors, fishing, and life. That last one is…

I could be wrong but I think this book will become a classic and still be around a hundred years from now. People in the future will be so impressed at the antique transportation and weapons.

This is another nail biter with no explanation of what the horror is... Great characters and an ending which could well be continued in a sequel, to fill in the back story and extrapolate into the future. I like how the author goes back…

Oh boy, where do I begin? The first 200 pages of this book were very interesting. Heller does a great job describing the places he imagines. I could really feel myself in this foggy and mountainous Coloradan forest with a redneck (which…
