Add a QuoteTammy Metzler campaign speech: "Who cares about this stupid election??? We all know it doesn't matter who gets elected President of Carver. Do you really think it's gonna change anything around here--make one single person smarter, or happier, or nicer?? The only person it does matter to is the one who gets elected. The same pathetic charade happens every year & everyone makes the same pathetic promises, just so they can put it on their transcripts to get into college. So vote for me, 'cause I don't even want to go to college... & I don't care; & as President, I won't do anything. The only promise I will make is that, if elected, I will immediately dismantle the student government system, so that none of us will ever have to sit through one of these stupid assemblies again!!!!! ...or don't vote for me--who cares??!! Don't vote at all!!!!!" (massive applause & cheering for Tammy)

joseph-- you'll be happy to know that "Election" got several nominations & won Best Feature at The Independent Spirit Awards for 1999.
Overflowing with razor-sharp wit and biting dialogue, Election is a delightfully twisted comedy that is heightened by Reese Witherspoon's pitch-perfect performance as the silently crazed Tracy Flick.
Must See - Election (1999) 103 min. This is an incredible film demonstrating the art of direction and pacing. Every scene is choreographed to elicit a response from the viewer. Matthew Broderick's character is probably one of the best on film. He's the proverbial loser in every way who gets himself in deeper and deeper trouble. Reese Witherspoon, as the over-achieving student, is excitedly perfect. The film only received an Adapted Screenplay nomination at the 2000 Oscars; I think it should've gotten much more. Great picture.
You say tomatoe... I say tomato... And, Rotten Tomatoes - a website devoted to reviews, information, and news of movies - gives "Election" a 93% on its Tomatometer - a percentage indicator of positive reviews from accredited film critics. This is a tight (some might say "up-tight") critically and commercially acclaimed comedy that became a cult classic once word of mouth got out at how biting it was at desecrating stereotypes associated with teenage years, and politics. As for Reece Witherspoon's performance as High School overachiever Tracy Flick - her acting was ranked at #45 on the list of the 100 Greatest Film Performances of All Time by Premiere Magazine - a U.S. New York based on-line and print publication dealing with film. "Election" makes a satirical statement on both the politics of the day and suburban high school life - using an election for high school student council president, as metaphor. If you don't get that... then, yeah... I guess it can appear like - not a comedy!
I found this to be a relatively dry, boring, and tedious movie. Reese Witherspoon made this movie just above horrible with her pretentious yet heartfelt portrayal of a go-getter.
