A somewhat stupid protagonist, who turns on people when she thinks she can get away it and completely ignores common sense etc. Utterly pedestrian and tiresome. I'm 1/3 into it and wondering if it's worth finishing. The premise is interesting but the "heroine" is almost unbearably conventional and average.

Like a few others said, this book is so-so. The plot is exciting and action-packed, yet the writing seemed almost mediocre, in comparison to other Epic YA fantasy novels. The story revolves around 16 year old Clary Fray who switches her life around the become a shadow-hunter. Filled with angels, demon, warlocks and more, this book is up to the brim with twists and suspense. The plot was well developed, but still slightly predictable. The book seemed to be written in the style of a younger, middle grade novel, with aspects of young adults. All in all though, it was a worthwhile, and interesting book that did keep you latched on, and the ending left you wanting more. The book did remind me a bit of the Harry Potter, or even the Percy Jackson books, but it was still slightly different. I'd recommend this to anyone between the ages of 12 to 16 who wants a new read:)

This is a young adult book that feels like a young adult book. The writing style is fine but not exceptional, and the subject matter and action are designed for a younger audience to appreciate. I wouldn't recommend it to adults.

I looove this book! It has romance, action, comedy, and some horror to it! I highly recommend it! I could imagine the characters in my head and could see the whole thing playing in my head.
Even if you think it is boring from the beginning keep on going because it will get better!!

The novel is wonderfully well written and the characters are very in depth but I feel like it's a chore when I'm reading this novel. I have tried many times to get into the series but to no avail.

I don't think this is anything like Harry potter except for Voldemort and Valentine having a remarkable resemblance. This isn't a terrible series by any means, and it may be slow at times and stupid at others, like Isabelle's terrible flirting with Simon, but it makes you laugh and think and I cannot WAIT for the sixth book!!!! Ugh who called them Darkhunters?

The book was exceptionally well written with insight from more than three distinctive characters. The protagonist, Clary Fray, was being referred to in the third person, allowing the reader to peek into her mind and understand the way she thinks, without being distracted by her indecisive tendencies. This story features a classic love triangle which eventually merges into the world of fighting demons. The author, Cassandra Clare, has done the impossible by inserting gradual plot twist that can leave anyone wanting more. Overall this story was an amazing adventure to read and I have already started the second book in the series. I suggest this book for readers aged 12 to 18 due to a slightly mature theme but with the emotional situations a teenager could relate to.

I read this because my teen daughter loved it and begged me to read it as well. I wish I hadn't agreed to plow through it.
Didn't like the writing style, felt more like a screenplay than a novel.
Blatant rip-off of Harry Potter, but with angels and demons instead of witches and wizards, including magical wands (which very conveniently can solve any problem).
Written in a middle-school level vocabulary, but with sex, language, violence and drinking more like an adult novel (who IS this for???)
Plot is predictable.

Go read "The Martian", people!!!!

When clary enters the pandemonium club she hardly expects to witness a murder, especially one that only she seems to be able to see. Beginning with that night Clary gets plunged in to a hidden world of shadow hunters and downworlders. Starting with the disappearance of her mom and moving to the even more extreme, this book will leave you dying to read the whole series!

Great book about demons and Shadowhunters (demon slayers). This book becomes quite dark, interesting, and is a very good book. Highly suggest you read this book!

This is one of my favourite books. I love the characters, particularly Clary and Jace. The way Cassie Clare writes is wonderful, it is beautifully descriptive and witty. I fell in love with Jace in this book, and he remains my favourite male character. I also love Clary, she is 'one of us'.

The back:
Their hidden world is about to be revealed...
When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder--much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Clary knows she should call the police, but it's hard to explain a murder when the body disappears into thin air and the murderers are invisible to everyone but Clary.
Equally startled by her ability to see them, the murderers explain themselves as Shadowhunters: a secret tribe of warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. Within twenty-four hours, Clary's mother disappears and Clary herself is almost killed by a grotesque demon.
But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know....

Through meeting Jace, Alec and Isabelle - teenaged defenders of demonic evil on earth - Clary becomes embroiled in a world class struggle of good and evil and realizes that she may have superhero traits of her own.

"That's why when major badasses greet each other in movies, they don't say anything, they just nod. The nod means, 'I am a badass and I recognize that you, too, are a badass,' but they don't say anything because they're Wolverine and Magneto and it would mess up their vibe to explain." - Simon Lewis

“Well, when I was five, I wanted my mother to let me go around and around inside a dryer with the clothes,” Clary said. “The difference is, she didn’t let me.”
“Probably because going around and around in a dryer can be fatal,” Jace pointed out, “whereas pasta is rarely fatal. Unless Isabelle makes it.”
