Add a CommentWow. I am not sure how to describe this wonderful book. I have never been much of a fan of the fantasy genre, aside from the Harry Potter series, so I was quite surprised to love this story as much as I did. The author's narration was top notch, the best I think I have ever encountered in an audiobook, so it's hard to say how my enjoyment of the book was derived from simply hearing such a talented storyteller vs the plot itself. I think I actually developed a wee bit of a crush on Gaiman if the truth be told.......... The characters were very well developed and the plot quite original IMO. I will definately check out his other titles
I tried to listen to this book in the car. The problem is that the author who reads the book lets his voice drop at the end of almost every sentence. In order to hear the quiet words over the engine noise, the volume has to be turned up so that the words at the beginning of the sentence are too loud. So, I gave up before the first cd was finished.
Excellent. I first read the story and enjoyed it. But hearing Neil read it absolutely took it to the next level. He did a wonderful job and I would happily recommend this book to any young adult or adult fantasy/alternate reality reader.
Of course I loved it, it is Neil Gaiman. Every one of his books amazes me, but all in different ways. He has such an imagination that I am in awe. Here, the main character is Richard Mayhew, a young man living in London and living a quiet ordinary life, a meek man. His life is changed completely when he stops to help a girl he finds bleeding on the street, as he and his fiance are on their way to an important dinner. His act of human kindness takes him to a side of London he never knew existed and causes him to disappear from his ordinary life. The London he now exists in is a difficult place, full of shadows and hidden meanings, full of creatures that are unpredictable or horribly predictable, full of creatures with special talents and amazing histories. Richard struggles against this world at first, until he realizes that he must deal with it. Richard is everyman, who has been leading an ordinary life until he finds himself in this situation. This book asks the question: what does a man really want from life? and finds that the answer isn't as easy as one thinks. Taking someone completely outside of reality as they know it and challenging them to be all that they can be is a life-changer.
Listening to Gaiman read his own book is like hearing the characters the way they were meant to be heard, and it is exquisitely delightful. The story itself is terrific, and this is the best way to experience it.
The author, Neil Gaiman, is the reader on this compact disc. He does an outstanding job, making the characters of "London under" come alive. The main character, Richard Mayhew, rescues an injured girl on the streets of London. He becomes embroiled in the adventures of characters in this other parallel London. Gaiman makes this character sound a little like Shrek, and the other characters; the Marquis du Carabas is a languid fop; Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandermar are the oiliest sounding villains you'll ever meet.
