He seemed to be in the minor leagues, except for the fact that he is a member of two major foreign policy and covert-ops committees. However, once Charlie is prodded by his major conservative supporter, Joanne Herring, Wilson learns about the plight of the people who are suffering from the effects of the brutal Soviet occupation of Afghanistan. With the help of the maverick CIA agent, Gust Avrakotos, Wilson dedicates his canny political efforts to supply the Afghan mujahideen with the weapons and support needed to defeat the Soviet Union. Ultimately, Charlie learns that while military victory can be obtained, there are other consequences and prices to that fight that are ignored to everyone's sorrow. Based on a true story.

Add a CommentGreat movie based on a true story of how Afghanistan got their weaponry to use against the Russians and then used it on us later story of the Zen Master...
Story is interesting, characters a little-far fetched but apparently based on a true story. Worth watching for the Aaron Sorkin dialogue.
Parts of the movie were quite complex and a bit hard to follow. While there is some action (actual war footage, I believe), there is a lot of focus on the congressman's discussions and negotiations. I would definitely recommend this film to anyone who has an interest in world affairs or politics.
How we built Afghanistan into the nation it is today. Julia Roberts is in this movie just long enough for you to do the dishes and put in a load of laundry.
WHT?
This movie provides a fascinating look of a particular time in history. The bonus features round out the background nicely. I found the last words spoken (by Dan Rather) very prophetic.
Great movie that I would recommend to anyone. I did not know of its historical ties until watching the movie. The cast is of course oustanding, however it's the dialogue, wit, and how the movie is directed that just puts this title to greatness ! I highly recommend it.
I enjoyed watching these actors perform. They had great characters.
Certainly an interesting film to watch, and a little amusing considering the turn American politics took in the last 10 years. While Philip Seymour Hoffman was brilliant and very convincing, Tom Hanks was ok but rather divided into the three main character traits exhibited; charming womanizer, manipulative politician, and humanitarian. I had a hard time believing his character could be all three.
This film is well worth taking the time to watch. While some may feel that it oversimplifies American foreign policy, it's a difficult subject to expand upon in a 2 hour movie that was meant to be a character(s) study. It is true to the era it depicts, before sexism became a no-no, and if you can see it in that light, you should enjoy the movie.
