Add a CommentFictionalized account based on a real incident in Ron McNair's life. McNair was only the second African American to become an astronaut. Born in SC, as a child he dreamed of becoming an airplane pilot. Ron successfully challenged the local library's policy that denied library cards to Blacks and that only allowed white patrons to borrow books and take them home. This story is especially important because the library already skirted its own rules by allowing white patrons to check out books on their cards and then to give them to black patrons to bring home. Certain to encourage discussions about racism and all its subtleties. Blue and Naden do a great job making this very serious subject accessible to young children-- as do Tate's child friendly illustrations. Well paired with Richard Wright and the Library Card/Miller and Goin' Someplace Special/McKissack.--- In 1986, Ron McNair died when the space shuttle challenger exploded after takeoff.
