Finnikin of the Rock - Lumatere Chronicles – book 1 was an enjoyable book to read but I found it a little slow to start. I did have numerous great laughs while reading this book at the same time as I listened to the book on CD. It’s a great way to sit back and relax. I do however recommend that some of the humour is more appropriate for older teenage readers. Doctor-at-Bass! T. A.

Finnikin of the Rock has one of the elements I love in YA fantasy: strong young people fulfilling their destinies in surprising ways. It also covers eternal themes that play out day after day around the (real) world, like violence against women, refugees and exiles from war, genocide, love and faith, and the inadequacy of seeing the world in black and white.

I've read a lot of fantasy books, and this one stands out as one of the best. The characters are so real and genuine, and the setting and events so realistic... it's nice to read a book where you really care about the characters and where what happens really MATTERS.

This is a heart-wrenching fantasy epic. Finnikin lives in exile, kept out of his home country by a curse that sealed the kingdom behind an impenetrable wall. Now 19, he learns that he's been chosen to lead his people home. Finnikin and his fellow exiles all grapple with guilt and sorrow for the tragedy that befell their homeland 10 years earlier, and fear for what awaits them inside. This is one of the best YA novels of 2010.

Very nice. If you want a light fantasy, well written, well developed world, characters, everything... This is it. It's nice to see something like this book out.

Awesome! I have loved each of Melina Marchetta's books, and this one does not disappoint. Without giving anything away, here are the high lights: great character development, chemistry between characters, action, romance, and a great plot with depth. Though the the main character is male I think that he is very easy to relate to. This is a classic that I think many will enjoy.

Sir Topher finally looked up. “Because any hope beyond that, my boy, would be too much. I feared we would drown in it.” "Then I choose to drown,” Finnikin said. “In hope. Rather than float into nothing.
