This is a very, very unusual take on the paranormal romance. It features a world where everyone under 18 can see ghosts (after the Shift). Some dead people move on (presumably to heaven or whatever), others stay on earth as ghosts (and can only visit places they visited while alive) and others turn to shades which are dark spirits. When the main character's boyfriend dies and become a ghost, she struggles to move on and to help him move on. It is quite poignant at times and also has a nice mythology.

I will definitely be recommending this book to people. I found it really interesting and a good balance between a real teens life and the fictional world that smith-Ready creates.

Enter a world where everyone born after the Shift, a major magical convergence that coincided with the winter solstice 16 years ago, could see ghosts. Our heroine, Aura was the first child born after the Shift. She's grown up seeing ghosts and shades (malevolent shadows born from angry ghosts) and is investigating standing stones around the world in hopes of figuring out what happened... and how to change it back. But when her boyfriend Logan has an accidental overdose and comes back as a ghost, her life begins to crumble around her. A ghost hunting government agency begins an aggressive recruitment campaign and her new history partner Zachary has secrets of his own. This book is an emotional rollercoaster that explores many heavy topics (life, death, love) with great finesse. Some of the content is mature but not graphic so recommended for 16 and up.

If you upset Aura in her weakened state, I will end you Son, hiding the truth is just the coward's way to lie.
