Simon is a Hong Kong high school student who is failing English. Amy is Chinese American, dragged to Hong Kong by her mother, and she’s having trouble speaking Chinese. The two meet on the subway and form an unlikely friendship. Spare and simple, a very sweet and well-drawn friendship story. I had a hard time appreciating the climax because I’m pro-life, but that in and of itself is not a flaw in the writing. The Hong Kong setting was vivid without being overpowering—from my few visits to Hong Kong, it all rang true.
