  • SuzeParker rated this: 5 stars out of 5.

Jamie Matthews, 10 years old, doesn't even remember Rose, who was blown up in a London terrorist attack five years earlier. What he does know is that, in the aftermath, his family has fallen apart. His mother believes she needs the new man she's met in her grief support group more than her surviving children need HER. (Don't get me started on parents who abandon their children.) Jamie's father drowns his sorrow in booze. (Don't get me started on that, either.)

Jasmine, Rose's twin, is just 15, but has to be mother and father to Jamie, all while trying to deal with losing her sister, moving to a new town and being an anchorless teenager.

The mean boys at the new school figure Jamie's a perfect whipping boy. So pretty much everything that could go wrong, does.

Yet, with all the bad things that happen, there's Jamie, this plucky, sweet little boy who's finding his way in life with the help of a wonderful new friend at school (even though she's exactly the wrong kind of friend, according to Dad)and a pretty cool big sister.

There were moments this book was so sad I thought I couldn't go on reading. But I couldn't stop, either, because I so wanted everything to turn out alright for Jamie and Jas.

I loved this book.
