Add a CommentAnother great ride with Linwood Barclay - twist after twist, right to the last page. Also poignant on the challenges of caring for a fragile sibling once your parents are gone and there's no one else to look after someone who will never be able to live independently.
Excellent. Just when you think you have it figured out you find out your wrong. Keeps you going to the very last page.
I happened upon Linwood Barclay one day and have remained forever grateful. I have read all of his books. I absolutely love how Barclay weaves pieces of his own life's experiences into all his novels~even if it's just a physical setting. My only complaint: there are no new novels for me to read. I live in hope! I recommend that new readers start with Barclay's first novel and continue forward. There is a discernable thread that links them all together. Enjoy!!
Thomas believes he needs to memorize maps of all the cities of the world in the event of a massive electronic attack. He is busy 'walking' through New York City on Whirl360, a website modelled on Google Earth, when he sees what he thinks is a murder being committed. He is a schizophrenic and cannot leave his house so persuades his brother, Ray, to investigate. Very good story, very believable, nicely paced. Enjoyed it from beginning to end - definitely a page-turner.
Totally believable suspense. Could not put it down. Barclay's books are always a pleasure to read. Lots of twists and turns
Linwood Barclay - one of my favourite authors - "Trust Your Eyes" - couldn't put the book down!
I've never read a book by Barclay that I didn't enjoy. This latest is fantastic - exciting, twists and turns. Almost impossible to put down. A must read!! Finished it in 1-1/2 days and returned so that the other 148 people can get their turn.
Another thrilling page-turner by Barclay. I literally could not put this one down. Numerous twists and turns and an ending that gave me chills made for an extremely riveting read.
Another excellent thriller by one of the masters. Barclay is in the class of Harlan Coben, Joseph Finder, John Verdon and a few always compelling others. A fast enjoyable read, a complex plot somehow made perfectly believable, and a surprising twist or two.
I think one reason Linwood Barclay's books are so successful is that his characters are ordinary people, people like you and me. The things that happen to them, while threatening and sometimes fatal, are things that could happen to anyone. It's all a matter of coincidence, timing, and circumstances. His characters are just going about their daily life, when something they do intersects with something that someone dangerous is doing. And things move quickly from there. Here, we have Ray, an illustrator, who has come back to his hometown after the accidental death of his father. He must plan for his brother Thomas' future and wrap up his father's estate. Thomas is intelligent, but not able to function independently, and he has an obsession with maps. Thomas has covered the walls of his rooms with maps and spends all his time on his computer on a program called Whirl360, very similar to Google streetview, where he travels the cities of the world, memorizing the streets and what is on them. He has been dependent on his father for everything, and with his father gone, Ray must find an appropriate living arrangement for him. When Thomas sees something on his virtual travels, he is sure he is witnessing a crime, and tries to convince Ray to follow up on it. When Ray reluctantly does, we reach the moment where the worlds intersect and the two men get drawn into a world for which they are unprepared. With lots of suspense, and interesting characters, we are brought into a story that is hard to stop reading. Luckily this was my book for a flight, and I managed to almost finish it during that time. With two pages left, I could hardly wait to find a moment to reach the final, satisfying conclusion, one with a nice little twist to it.
