Ilsa Bick is a very compelling author. Even though the storyline is dark, unhopeful and downright depressing, her writing style made me want to keep on reading. Still hoping for a glimmer of happiness to shine through here, and maybe in the third volume of the trilogy, dare I hope that there is some sort of resolution and happy ending? Got a bit confusing with the different characters split up and narrating their own adventures, but overall well done, if very depressing. Bick's take on a future apocalypse is very dismal.

After reading some of these comments I was a little slow at picking this book up. I did however and I enjoyed it. It is a little confusing how Bick continuously switches between characters views from chapter to chapter but overall I think it is a decent read.

I would like to know what the heck is going on with Peter as well. And what on earth is Lena doing?

This book has convinced me that Ilsa Bick creates fictional characters for one purpose: to make them suffer, graphically and horrifically. She tells a good story with an onslaught of adrenaline and suspense that is compelling, but she dwells so lovingly on her constant descriptions of violence, from its contemplation and anticipation to the guns and other tools of its trade to its execution and implementation to its effects and consequences. She depicts a completely bleak image of humanity as lacking in all compassion, generosity, and selflessness and coats it in violence porn. Even as I kept reading to find out what would happen next, I kept asking myself just what I was getting out of the experience. And I'm not really sure. Bick is too good a writer for me to dock her down to two stars for my lack of enjoyment, but I doubt I'll be finishing the series.

Utterly confusing. Somehow Bick skews off of the zombie-apocalyptic world, and the relationship with the Chuckies, those in Rule, the military, and everyone else is completely tangled and all over the place. What in the world is going on with Chris and Peter? Why does Alex not leave the band of the Changed? Whatever happened to Emmy? The only part I really enjoyed were the short, clipped scenes describing Tom's actions after he was saved by an elderly couple. Yes, I admit Bick is excellent at horro fiction- her scenes of carnage and bloody fights the Changed have are certainly gruesome enough. The novel is fast-paced and action- packed as well, but the plot is a bit lacking.
