A rather tedious read. Lasdun never manages to convey how truly awful his experience with this crazed ex student was. Maybe that's because there are so many worse atrocities than the internet stalking and slandering commited by this unhinged young woman, it just never seems all that dire. It is more about how his reputation was smeared online by this mentally ill former student, and to give him credit, he does come across as thoughtful and compassionate even as he is being victimized. However, one gets the feeling that this could have been an interesting magazine article, but to drag it out into a book required a lot of navel gazing filler which makes for a mostly dull read.

"Novelist and poet James Lasdun was teaching a fiction writing course at a New York college when one of his students impressed him with her writing abilities. He served as a mentor and helped her look for a publisher, but then her interest in him crossed over into sexual advances. Though he tried to distance himself, she escalated to threats, then began posting defamatory statements on the web and sending obnoxious messages in his name. In Give Me Everything You Have, Lasdun recounts the facts, then compassionately considers what happened from several different angles." April 2013 Biography and Memoir newsletter
