I did not find this book compelling at all, maybe because of the 1st person narrative style. I disliked all the main characters, especially the main protagonist, Francis. I found the setting of the diamond mines of South Africa interesting and may look for more books with that setting.

An excellent read. Had a hard time putting it down! I was drawn in page by page, the characters are unforgettable, the descriptions of South Africa for the time period (1877) put you right in the center of it all. I would look forward to the author's next book.
