The author manages to pull you right into the story. You worry about Standish. You cringe for Hector. You want to hold little Eric Owen. The little illustrations add to the eerie tone. Highly recommended.

Maggot Moon is a novel about political oppression. The Motherland (never officially named) controls EVERYTHING in Zone 7 where Standish Treadwell lives with his grandfather. It's full of disappeared people, tortured students, and economic/social oppression. The highlight-and what makes Maggot Moon different-is the unique narrator Standish. He captures you with his story from the first chapter and keeps you engaged to the point of reading the whole thing in one session. He's what the Motherland would call "impure". Both physically and mentally. He cannot read or write, he has one brown and one blue. He should by all accounts be exterminated but he survives. Perhaps because his perceived impurity protects him and makes him invisible. Maggot Moon tells the story of Standish and his determination to stand up to the ruthless Motherland.
