Elise really is so self-aware, so clear on how she feels and why...I can see where being in high school can kind of screw with that - make you think that you need to look a certain way, act a certain way...She tries to fit in, but I don't think she tries very hard, because who really wants to be someone they're not? She finally finds something she's good at, makes some new friends, finds a guy (who's a douchebag, but that's later), and starts to figure out that she has a place in the world, and she's comfortable there. Most of her observations and sentiments are spot on, though some of her interactions with her family seem to be her pretending to be someone else. I thought it was a really decent book.

"Sixteen-year-old Elise feels like she was "born to be unpopular" - she's always been a failure at fitting in. A few months after surviving a suicide attempt, she stumbles onto Start, an underground dance club, where she finds music and friends who actually make her feel like she belongs. She also meets Char, a talented (and cute) DJ, who - between kisses - helps Elise develop her own skill for DJing. But can Elise hold on to her newfound confidence even when her past mistakes catch up to her? Real, raw, and moving, this music-infused story of self-discovery "pulsates with hope for all the misfits" (Kirkus Reviews)." "Sometimes people think they know you. They know a few facts about you, and they piece you together in a way that makes sense to them. And if you don't know yourself very well, you might even believe that they are right. But the truth is, that isn't you. That isn't you at all." -- Elise Dembowski
