"From the former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Education, "whistleblower extraordinaire" (The Wall Street Journal), one of the foremost authorities on education and the history of education in the United States, author of the best-selling The Death and Life of the Great American School System; The Language Police ("Impassioned . . . Fiercely argued . . . Every bit as alarming as it is illuminating" --The New York Times); and the now-classic Great School Wars: A History of the New York City Public Schools--an incisive, comprehensive look at today's American public schools that argues persuasively against those who claim our public school system is broken, beyond repair, and obsolete; an impassioned but reasoned call to stop the rising "privatization movement" draining students--and funding--from our public schools, a book that puts forth a detailed plan of what needs to happen to schools and with public policy to insure the survival of this American institution so basic to our democracy"--

Required reading for legislators, school board members, and Arne Duncan. Highly recommended reading for parents, teachers, and anyone who cares about the future of our nation. This book deftly exposes the hoaxes of the so-call education "reform" movement with irrefutable statistics and research.

A great book, albeit a bit too low-key for this ancient radical. Ravitch explains fundamentally how they are defunding public education, while redirecting taxpayer monies to private sector profit, the underlying foundation of everything regarding privatization today in America! Amazing that President Obama would make such a hypocritical speech at the funeral for Nelson Mandela, while just a year or so ago the president, on national television, publicly lauded the mass firing of every teacher in a Chicago high school, ostensibly because of the so-called behavior of just several teachers there! (All those teachers were later reinstated when they won a wrongful termination lawsuit!) All for the sleazy privatization - - or defunding - - of the American school system, and destruction of the few remaining unions around today, the teachers' unions.
