Extremely well written. Will never forget the characters.
One of my favorites. Extremely well written about goodness in the midst of terrible times. Loved the ending although life seems so hopeless, little kindnesses can get you through. Long book though
One of the best books I've ever read - you won't be able to put it down. Mr. Mistry transports you to India and connects you to his characters in ways you will never forget.
This book was written by an Indian who has been living in Canada for the past 30-plus years. Thus, although it is a book set in, and very much about, India (particularly the India under Indira Gandhi), it has a quintessential Canadian gloom about it. Don't get me wrong; this is a compelling book, and its very wryness somehow makes descriptions of the horrific bearable, but I would not recommend reading it unless your personal horizon is relatively free from despair.
A great piece of fiction, utterly believable and quite shocking at the same time. The epilogue left me shocked and have been thinking about this book a lot ever since.
A gripping tale of four characters from diverse backgrounds, brought together by destiny, during the economic, social and political upheaval that followed the Emergency period declared by Indian govt. The characters are beautifully etched and evokes a certain pathos and makes you cringe under the unfairness of it all. From the caste based discrimination of rural India to the corrupt ways of the govt prevalent in the country during the mid 70's, this story is a compelling read.so worthy of all the awards and honours conferred, though the ending was rather depressing.
A terribly sad book, but really well written and bluntly realistic.
This is a novel you must read. Since it is mostly about lower caste people in India, it may seem at first that it will be difficult to identify with the characters. Soon, however, you will find that you are deeply embedded in their world and that you care about them deeply. A great novel.
Just when you think it can't be worse, it is. It makes me feel very fortunate for the life I have.
I loved this book! Everything about it is great...the story, the writing, etc. Beautifully written and a book you cannot put down.
Unbelievable depressing. Its horrifying to know that some people live such painful lives of poverty and unfairness.
This book managed to maintain a fine balance of hope and despair except when it came to the epilogue when it became to despairing. The characters are wonderfully thought out and their lives cleverly intertwined with one another's.
