Add a CommentTo quote one of my students, "This is a very, very, VERY silly story." True. I like the gradual mental breakdown that George's mother has. :)
George is a small dog with a big problem. When his mother tells him to bark, he can't. Instead he says, "Meow," not quite the sound his mom was expecting. George keeps trying, but to his mother's growing frustration, he can only produce the sounds of other animals, like "Oink" or "Moo." Finally George's mother takes him to the vet who promises to get to the bottom of the problem. The cause of George's unusual sounds is even funnier than the idea of a dog who quacks. The simple line drawings in this book are amazingly expressive. It's easy to see George's mother's growing irritation at George's inability to bark properly and her surprise at what the vet finds. This book is perfectly suited for curling up with your favorite little one to read together. Children will giggle as they gleefully point out that a dog doesn't say "Meow." A cat does. The simple format and repetition make this an excellent choice for beginning readers, too.
This book is great, and my daughter found it absolutely hilarious (3 1/2 yrs). She has never laughed as hard at a book as she did at this one.
Very funny! Gets everyone laughing!
Ds thought it was fun! But it was also oddly gross.
A storytime favourite - kids love it and I've always enjoyed presenting it.
A perennial storytime favourite.
Not sure if a 3 year old could understand the abstract humor of pulling animals out of the dog's mouth but my grandson got it and found the book quite funny.
Hilarious. Terrific read aloud for storytime. Kids love hearing what animal george sounds like and seeing what will come out next. Also good for kindergarten up to grade 2 - the ending leaves readers thinking, and could lead to a discussion or a writing assignment.
My "other" most favorite story time title (for the moment, anyway!)
