Quint: [the Orca, their boat, is clearly sinking with water all over the deck, Quint hands Brody a small hand pump] Pump it out Chief!
Dreyfuss as Hooper: "What we are dealing with here is a...a perfect engine, an eating machine, it's really a miracle of evolution. All this machine does is swim...& eat...& make little sharks & that's all!"
Hooper:I actually pay for most of this by myself. Brody: You rich? Hooper: Yeah.
We're going to need a bigger boat.
I just heard that there was a girl killed her last week. And yet you let people go SWIMMING anyway! My boy is DEAD. I just wanted YOU....to know that."
"And so--- 1100 men went in to the water. 316 came out. The sharks took the rest. June the 29th, 1945. But we delivered the Bomb."

Add a CommentThe secret of this film is not the shark perse, but the idea of the shark, created and perpetuated by the relatively simple theme music, and the visual elements that contribute to the idea of the shark's presence. The fact that the mechanical shark did not work very often actually made the film better because of the indirect shark references. The special features are worth a look if only to see the recounting of Spielberg's reaction to the music score. Two notes on the piano? Really? That's all it took to change the ocean for millions of people.
Spawned the entire summer blockbuster genre. We owe this film. Best watched on Blu-Ray, but fantastic regardless.
Evin better than I remenbered !!
Copy with NYPL ID # 3 3333 19096659 4 (Performing Arts Library Records Collection) is seriously scratched. Multiple skips and stops during playback. Rcmd replacement.
Smile you son of a-. I've seen this movie many times before, but you haven't truly seen it until you've seen it on this Blu-ray remaster, the video quality is absolutely phenomenal. If you have a high definition television, prepare for an amazing movie experience. As for the movie itself, an absolute classic masterpiece and really set the world wide precedence for humans fear of sharks.
Very scary movie when I saw it as a boy. Classic.
I first bought this movie on VHS tape and enjoyed the Dolby Surround sound from my four speakers. Now with this "30th anniversary edition" the sound is even better. My subwoofers come to life playing that very famous bass of the oncoming terror in DTS 5.1 HOMETHEATER sound. The improved sound makes this classic even better to watch and listen to. I give this new version 5 stars!!! For very good sound....Two soft shell tacos, buttered popcorn, and a chocolate shake.
The book had more depth, with the exploration of evil and temptation. The film lost most of that, but is still fairly well-made, given it's period. You can definitely see the 70s (low) production values, but the editing and placement means the tension is there, without the massive gore-fest of more recent movies. A necessary part of film history.
I was very disappointed with this film, mainly for its annoying characters and all the stupidity from humankind throughout the film's duration. I was really hoping that Jaws would win in the end.
EPIC!!!! Awesome action! Definitely one of Spielberg's best films!!
