Summary
Add a Summary"A masterwork from a master filmmaker, The Shining is widely (and rightly) held as one of the greatest horror movies ever made. Much more than just a ‘horror movie’, celebrated auteur Stanley Kubrick warped Stephen King’s novel into something which oozes ambiguity (the hotel was haunted in the book, here it’s less clear) – which is why it remains so fascinating to this day. Still the subject of obsessive scrutiny (see recent documentary Room 237), many aspects of the film are open to interpretation. Not least that impossibly chilling final shot. While impatient newcomers will likely find the measured pacing a tad drawn-out (and there is an argument to be made here), The Shining is a deeply intoxicating experience. Right from the eerie opening where we wind along a mountain road via helicopter point-of-view, there’s a mounting sense of elusive unease. Arriving at the Overlook hotel, a feeling of deep-rooted evil runs through every frame in mesmerising fashion. Hell, even the dizzyingly-patterned carpets are somewhat hypnotic. Of course, general audiences are familiar with the more iconic scenes (“Heeere’s Johnny!”; the spooky twins; Red Rum), and it speaks volumes that they remain affecting despite years of parody. Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall and child actor Danny Lloyd are all excellent (as well as Scatman Crothers in a handful of key scenes), but the film is ultimately Kubrick’s. Feeding Nicholson cheese sandwiches (which Jack hated) to create a sense of repulsion and apparently forcing Duvall to do 127 takes of a single scene, the master craftsman’s obsessive approach and technical mastery results in some spellbinding filmmaking (see those long tracking shots), and an unforgettable experience." --Stephen Carty, Flix Capacitor

Add a CommentStanley Kubrick's "The Shining" has got to be one of the all-time worst big-budget horror films ever made. Everything about The Shining said "expensive", but nothing about it said "scary"..... It truly baffles me that such an impressive director as Stanley Kubrick would ever consider tackling the mess of a typical Stephen King horror novel and try to adapt it to the screen.... All-in-all - The Shining was a dud. There was only one frickin' murder in it, which, in my opinion, was a completely unforgivable body-count when it comes to any horror film.... Two of the biggest strikes against this film were the casting of that goofus, Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance and having that pudding-faced kid, Danny Lloyd, as Torrance's brat son, Danny.
Haunting, immersive, and brilliant.
Yawn! - Like, was this so-called "horror" movie really supposed to be scary?? Was it!? _____ In my opinion The Shining's dud-factor clearly comes from the obvious flaw in Stanley Kubrick's directorial abilities. That's right._____ Put plainly, Kubrick just did not understand the genre of horror. 'Cause if he had, then The Shining would have been a brilliant classic of modern-day horror. And it wasn't.____ It didn't help matters much that actor Jack Nicholson was cast in the lead role. Like some sort of demented comedian, Nicholson went right off the wall at near warp-speed and this, alone, spoiled the element of suspense and terror completely._____ Yes. The Shining did deliver some mighty eerie moments, but the overall effect of horror was, ultimately, a pretty dismal one._____ If you ask me I'd say that this film was one of the dullest "shinings" that I've ever seen. _____ Yep. A very forgettable film, indeed.
i want to put this movie on hold so bad bad i dont know why i can't it just wont work ... maybe i need to be an adult? i cant wait till im like 15 yrs old to watch this thing ive got things behind me... if only i could watch it now. In my free time.. All Alone.. I saw all the trailers and they didnt scare me much, but either it did or not i am not allowed to check out this movie.. i guess.. or can i use my dads' card? ;D JustKidding! :L
The Shining presents a different kind of horror compared to modern films. There is little gore or random things popping out of nowhere; rather, it is the suspense and unsettling mood that creeps throughout the entire movie that is truly disturbing. Classic Kubrick film.
I enjoyed the book. The movie would have been OK, except Jack Nicholson trashed it with his trademark over the board hamming.(Ryan Reynolds did similar damage in Blade 3). I just could not take Nicholson's leers and jeers and grins seriously. Same crazy shtick he displayed in virtually all his films.
The NUMBER ONE scariest movie I've ever seen. One of those movies that the more you think about it, the scarier it gets. Sure to keep you up all night, but a good movie for an easy edreniline rush.
Probably the only movie to ever actually scare me.
