The Untold Story of the 1887 Burning of San Jose’s Chinatown

10:00 AM – 11:00 AM

Description

Local author Lily K. Lee will discuss the burning of San Jose’s Chinatown in May 1887 and the journey to write her book about this little known tragedy.

About the Presenter
Lily is a local author who writes short stories for the World Journal, a food column for Distinctive Taste magazine and books in Chinese. Her journey to write Fire Scar: The Untold Story of the 1887 Burning of San Jose’s Chinatown was pure happenstance. While she waited for a friend in front of the Fairmont Hotel, she saw a plaque memorializing the Chinatown community that once stood at that very site before it was burned to the ground in 1887. This inspired her to bring to light this unsettling story of San Jose's past.
