Nature Hiking For Beginners

6:00 PM – 7:00 PM

Are you interested in hiking and exploring natures trails but not sure where to start? Park Rangers Greg Smutnak and Andrew Verbrugge will be guiding us on where to go, what to expect, how to prepare, and more. Join us for this hour-long discussion on hiking for beginners, and feel free to bring your park questions for the Q&A at the end!

Andrew Verbrugge is an Alumni of CSU Chico and has been with the District for nine years. Prior to that, he has worked at several different park agencies like City of Chico, Sonoma County Parks, Army Corps of Engineers, and US Forest Service. Andrew aims to incorporate his experience from his days as a Boy Scout with his experience as a ranger to create programming for teenagers and young adults that helps them safely use local parklands.

Greg Smutnak has been with the District as a park ranger for 16 years, having worked as a Seasonal Open Space Technician during his first summer. He has also worked for California State Parks as a Park Aid, Santa Clara County Parks as a Maintenance technician and The City of Santa Cruz as a Beach Ranger. Greg grew up loving the outdoors and believes that getting paid to do the things he loves is priceless. “The best part of being a ranger is helping people in their time of need and protecting our natural resources.”
