Celebrate Native American Heritage Month with Docent Naturalists Nancy Weintraub, Marie Faust Evitt, and Stephen Buckhout on a moderately-paced hike (approximately 3.5 miles, 600 feet of climbing) along the partially shaded Mount Umunhum Trail. You'll begin at the Mount Umunhum summit parking to descend on the Mt Umunhum trail learning how native peoples who have lived here for thousands of years took care of the land before the arrival to the Europeans. You will reverse to the summit to enjoy your well deserved snack or lunch, and unparalleled views while learning the highlights of the natural and human histories of this iconic mountain. You will hear stories about the people who tended the peak for the last 10000+ years as well as select readings from Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer’s book Braiding Sweetgrass.
Bring plenty of water (there is no drinking water at the summit), your snack or lunch, comfortable hiking shoes, and optionally hiking poles for the descent and ascent.

This event is brought to you in partnership with the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District.
