Adult Nonfiction Book Discussion: Fluke: chance, chaos, and why everything we do matters

11:00 AM – 12:30 PM
Cupertino Library

Description

Open to all adults who love to read and discuss non-fictional literature. In June, the Cupertino Non-fiction Book Discussion Group will discuss the book, Fluke: Chance Chaos and Why Everything We Do Matters by Brian Klaas (2024) Human beings have a natural instinct to want to impose order and predictability grounded on rational decisions on our lives, Brian Klaas directly challenges the reader's sense of an orderly life and future, challenging that even making a small mistake like missing a freeway exit, or some other random action, planned or unplanned, might not only alter the course of our own lives, and possibly the future of many other people, but even world history without our knowing the consequences at the time. Attempting to control random events, such as financial or health crises and wars often means we end up worse off. But even in a world ruled so much by random chance, the author argues that everything we do matters, not only because of the actions we take, but because we are the ones taking it.

The Non-fiction Book Group meets on the second Sunday of each month at 11 am.
Sponsored by the Friends of the Cupertino Library.
