This month, the Cupertino Library Adult Book Discussion Group will talk about the novel Martyr! by Kaveh Akbar. (January 2024) Cyrus Shams is a poet grieving for his Iranian-born parents, using alcohol and drug abuse to cope with his bereavement, straining his relationships with everyone. Due to his mother's death in a plane crash caused by a United States Navy pilot, Cyrus has become obsessed with martyrs through history. Which leads to his acquaintance with Orkideh, an older painter foregoing treatment for her terminal breast cancer, and he realizes he has an opportunity to interview a living martyr.
