Nonfiction Book Discussion: Challenger:A True Story of Heroism and Disaster on the Edge of Space

11:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Cupertino Library

Description

Open to all adults who love to read and discuss non-fictional literature. In June the Cupertino Library Nonfiction Book Discussion Group will talk about Challenger: A True Story of Heroism and Disaster on the Edge of Space by Adam Higginbotham. (2024)
Adam Higginbotham’s account of the Challenger disaster of January 1986 follows the lives of the seven crew members aboard the Challenger, including teacher Christa McAuliffe. Famously and tragically, Challenger broke apart in mid air over the Atlantic Ocean seconds after its launch, leaving no survivors. While the nation was given ‘feel good” stories about Challenger’s mission in years and months leading up to the launch, funding was trimmed at the expense of safety by politicians, and warning signs were recognized, but often ignored or concealed from the public. When the investigation was underway, leakers and whistleblowers came forward, determined to reveal the truth about how the disaster came about.
The nonfiction book discussion group meets on the second Sunday of each month at 11am in Room 201B. All meetings are sponsored by The Friends of the Cupertino Library.
