Lincoln is still the best. I cannot think of any other statesman or politician who might be a humorous story-teller, love of poetry, literature and Shakespear, though these traits may not be the determinant of one's character or moral…

This brilliant book has been called a composite biography of Lincoln and the three men that he defeated to win the Republican presidential nomination in 1860: William Seward of New York State, Salmon P. Chase of Ohio and Edward Bates of…

I think it is excellent; many details. Like the reviews, too.

After reading this tome, I suggest a Sub Title in place of "Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln" to "Political Generosity and Magnanimity of Abraham Lincoln." Once you read this book, you will get special appreciation of Lincoln's…

This could've used a merciless editor. Daniel Day-Lewis was great.

Prize winning book about Lincoln's Civil War team which included four rivals for the 1860 presidential election: Seward, Stanton, Bates, Chase. Explores how this unlikely grouping served the nation under Lincoln's leadership.

This author took me from a person that dreaded learning about history to someone that couldn't wait to learn more. The writing is brilliant, and as long as the book is, it never felt daunting. It's a hard one to put down once you start.…

I feel like I know Lincoln on a more personal level after reading this book. His sense of humor, his story telling abilities and his steadfast sense of duty to save the Union and bring it back together. The enormity of the responsibility…

This book give a complete picture of Lincoln as he campaigned and as president, as well as of his rivals. Goodwin illustrates the genius and humanity of Lincoln as I never knew it - he is larger than his legend and much more complex.

Probably one of the best multiple biographies out there. The book explores the conflicting views of the members of Lincoln's cabinet. This book was the basis for the Steven Spielberg movie Lincoln. I have read the book twice and then…

Great book. I've read it 3 times. It works on so many levels. It's an historical biography of Abraham Lincoln, a book about team building and a book about politics. It makes you understand the past and that people don't change. it shows…

I just finished this wonderful biography. I could not put rhe book down. I picked it up quite by accident and was pleasantly surprised. I think this is my first biography of Abe and its a good introduction to his life and work. Thank you.

I didn't rate it because there was no point. If you want to read a good historical account of Lincoln, borrow David Herbert Donald or Gore Vidal.

Longer than the other Goodwin biography that I've read (No ordinary time : Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt : the home front in World War II) I think that Team of Rivals suffered a bit in having Lincoln share the stage with his rivals. While…

You expect excellent books when it comes to Doris Kearns Goodwin and with Lincoln she does not disappoint. A thoroughly researched book into the life of the 16th president makes the case that Mr. Lincoln was indeed our finest president.…

This is a very in-depth, intriguing work, chronicling a less-reviewed side of Lincoln: his Cabinet. A book about the rivals of Abraham Lincoln; the top politicians and leaders of the day, who he was smart enough to have near him. It took…

While it dwelt a bit too much on the social lives of some of the cabinet members and their families for my taste, the book laid out in great detail how Lincoln arrived at some of his positions on major issues of the day (Emancipation,…

Sally Field will play Mary Todd Lincoln in Steven Spielberg's Lincoln, based on Doris Kearns Goodwin's book Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, with a screenplay by Tony Kushner. Daniel Day-Lewis stars as the 16th…

A comprehensive review of the Lincoln years. Comparison with rivals / cabinet members adds good insight. However, the book is a little flat, perhaps because it does not illustrate how Lincoln turned his rivals into his supporters.
