The Fowlers are a normal family in Maine. Matt is the town doctor and loves to fish, his wife, Ruth, is the school's choir leader, and their son, Frank, is home from his first year of college. Frank is in love with Natalie, a young mother who isn't quite divorced yet from her ex-husband, Richard Strout, whose family runs the local cannery. It makes Richard's blood run cold to see his wife running around with another man. And soon, an unthinkable tragedy happens that will tear the Fowlers apart.

The movie deals with a couple's loss of their son to a domestic violence situation.
What other reviewers note as sluggish or slow movement is explained by its realism. No super exciting court room scenes, not a mystery to be solved. A quiet -- often without even background music -- movement through trauma and grief. It does leave an intriguing question on the table. What would you do? I think the movie shows the answers are not so easy. Nobody wins whatever choices are made. Spacek, Wilkinson and Tomei are excellent in this film.

Sluggish story of a divorcing couple with kids and a new young guy flirtation,. Gotta be better entertainment than this around,.

It was O.K for a home TV movie. I was entertained and interesting. But it was NOT worth the long library wait or the price to rent from a Red Box.

The box says this movie was nominated for 5 academy awards including best picture. Franky, I don't know how did that happen; this is simply a boring movie altogether. Marisa Thomei's acting is excellent, as usual. Other than that, just a bad movie. Don't waste your time.

If you can handle the slow parts and keep an open mind, this an incredibly well told story with terrific acting. And I found it to be very good for a movie with a less than a two million dollar budget. I would recommend this to fans of darker heartfelt dramas.
