Fizzy, frothy, mostly light-hearted satire about so-called conversion therapy. A teenage girl (Natasha Lyonne) is sent away to be "cured" at a camp when he friends and family suspect she's a lesbian. It's a comic film about a serious subject, and I do wish the satire had gone deeper and darker. It's got a bit of the kitschy, irreverent style of John Waters, but is not as over the top as his movies. The acting is strong and the cast enthusiastic: Lyonne (During her brief indie "It" girl heyday.), Clea DuVall, RuPaul (Out of drag!), Cathy Morairty, Bud Cort of "Harold and Maude," and a young Michelle Williams. Watch this with your conservative Christian relatives today. Directed by Jamie Babbit and written by Brian Wayne Peterson.

This almost-inept, often heavy-handed, little "lesbian" comedy from 1999 was basically nothing but a contrived, one-note joke that got real tiresome, real fast.

I'd say that "But, I'm A Cheerleader" could have probably been a somewhat amusing little film had the script not been such an awful mess right from the start.

Judging from what I saw, I'd say that neither the dizzy director nor the blasted screenwriters had the slightest understanding at all about the subject matter that they were dealing with in this film's dumbass story. I mean, these guys couldn't have possibly had the least bit of insight into the subject of lesbianism, otherwise this picture would've surely been destined to become something of a certified cult-movie classic. Indeed.

Anyway - I wouldn't waste my time with this ditzy dud if I were you.

Cute movie. Must see for anyone who has friend or family that is part of the LGBT community.

Fairly funny tongue-in-cheek movie.
