Includes the senator's speech from the 2004 Democratic National Convention! In this lyrical, unsentimental, and compelling memoir, the son of a black African father and a white American mother searches for a workable meaning to his life as a black American. It begins in New York, where Barack Obama learns that his father--a figure he knows more as a myth than as a man--has been killed in a car accident.

Listened to this while driving to DC for Obama's 2nd inauguration. Loved it, and the fact that it was read by him. His familiar voice and his story ... loved it!

Mr. Obama is surprisingly open about his youth (which might not have been the case if he had written the book after becoming president), and this is probably what his critics are after - but it's not what the book is about: it's about his voyage towards a distinct African-American identity. His reading of the Audiobook is a pleasure to listen to: he is a talented imitator of accents, too!

Wonderful audiobook. Barack Obama himself reads his story with great expression, humor, and candor. I am learning so much about our new president. He's had a very interesting life and it's just going to get more interesting.
