I had to read this book, not because its a genre that I normally read but because it was so hyped. I know some people in the BDSM scene and they are all so against it. I have read reviews that say its trash and stupid and poorly written, but its on the NY Best seller list. So I read it.

I wanted to read this book just to see what all of the hoopla was about. This story starts with a young virgin who is deflowered by an older and very experienced masochistic billionaire. His plan is to be her master so he grooms her to be his next SM submissive. This misguided young minion even signs an extensive and detailed contract that dictates everything she can and cannot do under his direction. This is where I quit reading. Erotica is one thing but this storyline is a disgusting and abusive portrayal of women. I only gave it a .5 (instead of nothing) star so it would bring the average rating down. Total waste of time!

While I wouldn't say that reading this book was a waste of my time, it wasn't a very good way to spend my time. It's very poorly written and author has an extremely limited vocabulary. I grew weary of the sex scenes. I want more story. I intend to read the second book in hopes that it is better. I do like the concept of the book and Christian Grey. My liking for the idea behind the book is the only thing that is keeping me reading it, though. There have been many times that, just to get through it, I reworded sentences as I read them so that way the book would be more bearable.

This was by far the worst book ever written. I read about 30 books a year and I have never stopped reading a book. I finish everything no matter what. This I returned after page 30. And I have not loved everything.
I was not offended by the content. Hey, you like S&M? Good for you. Enjoy. But the characters were weak and stupid and the writing was horrible. Please, save your time. This was horrible.

Haven't read this book, but from everything I've heard & read about it (including the upcoming film version), it seems to have a lot of all-too-coincidental similarities to the 2002 film "Secretary" (also available in the library catalog).

** spoiler alert ** Talk about polarized reviews. People curse this book with all they have, or love it. I saw either one star "hated this worse than anything" reviews or 5 star "love erotica" reviews. The writing sucks, which is why I returned it to the library with less than 15 pages read the first time I ever checked it out (glad I didn't invest anything in it -- it took four times checking it out before I finally read it.) But with all the hype, well, I decided if Hunger Games and Divergent and Girl with a Dragon Tattoo all made the big screen, as did this one, I should see what all the hoopla is about. Not big into kinky, but something about Ana made me keep reading. What will her heart decide? er, body? Yes, I'm ashamed to admit I read the whole thing. Only books that don't take me to the end get one stars. I give this 1.5. And in the end (spoiler alert!) I'm glad she dumped Christian, he was one f**ed up dude. Women who dream of what it's like to be swept up off your feet by Mr. Wonderful-with-a-dark-past and those wanting secretly to be dominated in every way, read away. Those who cherish good writing, don't bother. This is a quick mindless airplane read if you don't mind a lot of kinks, swearing, and unrealistic drivel. Millions have bought it so the publishers must have known what they were doing. Will I read more by E.L. James? No. I have too many "worthy reads" on my list to waste any more time.

Honestly, I first thought it was a colossal mix-up followed by a collective hallucination: the author actually wrote an erotic parody of Twilight, it somehow got misunderstood for real fiction, the author said, OK, whatever, and... voila!
Well, as we know, it wasn't that simple.
What I like: The title and the cover page.

Terrible, terrible book. The prose is really horrendous. I have absolutely no idea how this got past an editor. Besides the obviously terrible and often painful writing, I found this book completely offensive. Not because of the BDSM, of which there was surprisingly little, but because this is a description of an abusive relationship. The main character is repeatedly manipulated and guilted by the main love interest. She has crippling self esteem issues which he appears to prey upon. She also appears to have some sort of body dysmorphia/ eating disorder. This would be bad enough on its own, but its written in first person, present tense. So we get a wonderful front row view of her enabling and self loathing mentality. The only way I could see this book having any value is if it were used in like a social work class as an exercise in identifying victims' verbal and behavioral cues. Other than that, "Oh jeez", it's trash.

THIS BOOK HELPED VERY MUCH IN MY INCREASE OF VOCABULARY WORDS. I CAN'T WAIT TO READ "FIFTY SHADES DARKER". BESIDES THE FACT THAT I HAD A CHANCE TO INCREASE IN VOCABULARY, THIS BOOK WAS REALLY INTERESTING, THAT I CAN'T WAIT TILL THE NEXT BOOK. (:
