Lacks some depth. It is - very superficial, to the point that I wanted to quit reading in the first half of the book. Although in the second half it becomes more interesting.

Reggie, now a well-respected architect, is drawn back to Brighton Falls, Connecticut, when her mother, thought to have been a serial killer's fourth victim, reappears after 25 years. The chapters shift between the present day as Reggie attempts to finally identify the killer, and the fateful summer of 1985, when her mother disappeared.

Clues are painstakingly revealed in the back-and-forth narrative. At intervals throughout the book, I suspected almost all of the 1985 players of being the killer. That's a mark of a good mystery. McMahon's plot, characters and writing, and the outcome of the book, are quite satisfying.

I wish I had read this before McMahon's other books! The premise is interesting, but it reads like a more traditional murder mystery than her other work. There were far fewer plot twists and the ending was a bit predictable. Still a good read, though.

I was hooked from the first change through time! I love the way the author gave a little foreshadowing here and there to keep me interested and guessing. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good mystery.

I recommend all of McMahon's books, but this is her best book so far. I loved the main character and the story is gripping. She really keeps you guessing until the end as to who the killer is.

"Twenty-five years ago, 13-year-old Reggie Dufrane's mother fell victim to a serial killer (known as Neptune) who amputated one hand from each of his victims, leaving it on the police department's steps and posing the bodies around town. But while Reggie's mum's hand was delivered, her body was never found, and Neptune disappeared. Now a successful architect, Reggie must confront her past after she learns that her mother has been found alive. Worse than the fact that her mother can't tell her anything about Neptune is the possibility that he may be killing again. Though the suspense is nothing to sneeze at, it's the "full-blooded characters that make this thriller stand out from the serial-killer pack" (People)."
