The stern father of a Muslim family in France has his teenage son drive him to Mecca for the religious pilgrimage known as the hajj. The son, who is irreligious and has a non-Muslim girlfriend, doesn't relate to his traditionalist father, nor does the dad relate to his son -- a culture clash (and generational clash) that is the spine of their entire trip to Saudi Arabia.

One of the finest road-trip films ever! This powerful film will provoke even those with hearts of stone to reassess what's really important in life. For all the Islam-a-phobes, the film's central theme isn't about religion, but relationships. It's definitely a human condition story where any religion, race, or creed would work successfully as a back-drop. View it as a son's right of passage into what authentic manhood truly is. Just be sure to watch it through to the end. Ten years after my first viewing, I still feel gratitude for the message.
