Musically, it's absolutely a triumph. With William Christie at helm and Dawn Upshaw and David Daniels as principals, every other element falls into place. Now, as much as I understand the purpose behind this style of staging (to make it contemporary and hip), I am not in that camp, because it loses cultural context with the original.

This is a triumph for the singers and orchestra, Dawn Upshaw, David Daniels and Lorraine Hunt Lieberson are really wonderful. Production suffers from over-hipness.
