Jee-soo is a Korean-American living on Western Avenue in Los Angeles. His father, Chang-ik, and mother run Kim's Supermarket. Frank and Bobby are her brother. They are 2nd generation Korean immigrants. Chang-ik still maintains the way of life of Korea. Frank is very much Americanized. Jee-soo and Bobby run their lives in their own way. Jee-soo gives up her job as a medical doctor and leaves for New York to do something with movies which she likes very much. She returns to Los Angeles after achieving nothing in New York. Her family looks peaceful. But Chang-ik still does not understand Bobby. Lewis, a black man, Chang-ik's very close friend, visits Chang-ik often and Lewis's son Norman, who was a friend of Jee-soo when they were children, also visits Chang-ik's house. About this time the case of Rodney King becomes headline news. When the white policemen are found "not guilty" Los Angeles falls into chaos and every Korean stores becomes the target including Jee-soo's store.
