Could not get interested. Narrator read in a soft monotone voice.

Again, Lisa See has done her homework and we are the lucky beneficiaries. This book gives us a fictional peek into the influential and controversial Chinese opera, The Peony Pavilion, and lives of controversial, influential female literary individuals who wrote commentary on it during the fall of the then-corrupt Ming Dynasty and the rise of the Ching Dynasty of the invading Manchus. See has written this in such a way that we 21st century English-speaking North Americans can understand the significance of the customs of that time and place. Don’t miss the author’s note at the end.

Janet Song’s narration made listening to this long work ever-fresh and she was well cast in this role.

Thank you, Hennepin County Library, for making this enthralling story available to us!

Started as a novel of ancient China with a sheltered upper class woman. But, later turned into a ghost story...

Quite interesting, a very good read.
