Edmond has become gripped by the idea that it was no accident, but suicide. Caused by despair. Or as a punishment. His wife and his daughter lost their lives in a car crash. Edmond had argued with Monika about separation. They had traded ... Edmond always closes his eyes when he thinks about it. No other vehicle was involved, the motorway was almost empty. And yet the car sped through a barrier and plunged into the gorge. His wife and Kiki, his daughter, were almost unrecognisable. Edmond continues to run his business. But as evening settles in, He rarely goes home anymore ... What's there for him? No one is waiting for him, no child will jump into his arms In old age, when one has lived his life, he is entitled to befriend death in silence.
===
He doesn't need people anymore, He has only need of silence.
===
No wish, no words ... Farewell, then! Torn from you, alone, forsaken, no death could be more bitter.

It seems to me that I gave up women as women years ago. But then, I am not as old as Kogi. Not nearly so old.
===
Kogi said ... I only feel really alive beside a sleeping young woman. Maybe there are old men, men like Kogi, who caress such a young woman, touch her all over, without conscience.
===
When an old man it is lamentation, nothing more. Pah, lamentation! Arousal!
===
You say she's more experienced? What does that mean? She just sleeps!
===
Experienced ... Does that mean better? I want to look into your eyes. Blue. You remind me of someone. But of whom? You can't deceive me. You're still virginal. What are you doing here? Why? Oh well ... In the end, she's just a prostitute. A little whore. But ... so young.
===
This scent, it ... What does this scent remind me of? Of my mother Yes, perhaps. But can one still remember that ... after more than 60 years?

For the old there is death, for the young there is love. Death comes to us only once ...
-But what about love?
Who knows?
===
Sleep is something that is terrifying ... like death.
===
The sleeping face of a girl looks beautiful.
===
Am I not like all the others to suck new youth, to enjoy women who'd never even glance at them. Am I already such a wretch?
===
Look how the trash creeps, this stinking city, these dissolute children. But the Lord's hand will come, It will point the way to the light.
===
He is not a man. No, he's a beaten, frightened man. Is he perhaps afraid of approaching of not having reciprocated?

It was just after the Great War. Father was still in a prison camp, No doctor could help her, they said. The city was full of sick people. An old woman from the neighbourhood told her to cut off some of her hair to eat. That was the only thing to do. Mama did as the old woman said, After just one week, I thought.
Then she had no hair left at all. She stroked my head and said, "Now I'm going to cut off a lock of your hair." Back then I had thick, curly hair, but after two weeks, Then suddenly, as if by a miracle, she became healthy again. We would often stand together and laugh about our bald heads.

The first time I had sex, If you could call it that. It was Walburga's Holy Communion. Walburga was fourteen, and I was twelve. And Camilla, her younger sister, At 10 or 11 o'clock, We had to sleep in their parents' Walburga lay in the middle, ...

We had to consider His reputation?
-You mean that even dead men ...
===
You've come on such a cold night? To warm oneself on a young body and perhaps to die a sudden death ...
-What vile things you talk of! I hope you're not referring to me.
It's like the wind is blowing
-Oh, you mean the season?
Yes. And if the dead one's spirit.
===
The girl tonight is hot-blooded. Just right for such a cold night.

The first woman? It was my mother. What makes me think that? My first woman, yes. As she suckled me, Am I permitted to think such things? Then some time later ... eight? Yes, perhaps ... She was going out and wanted to say And she said ... You're not allowed to do that anymore. You're not my husband, after all.
===
You must forgive me. I'm just old, that's all. The death of an old fart.
===
Exactly 15 years ago today, It's hard to believe it's so long ago. What have I done in all these years? Why did you leave me? Why? I don't believe you ... It wasn't an accident. I simply can't believe that. You wanted to get away from me. But why? I don't understand. Whatever I did wrong ... You can't just like that. And why did you take Kiki, our little child, my child, your child,

An erotic film about a client of an exclusive establishment that caters to older men to spend private time sleeping with sedated beautiful naked women. On the surface, it was a fantasy place where lecherous desperate men relive their lost desires: lust, intimacy, passion and love. Per the director/actor/writer Vadim Glowna (1941 - 2012): a meditation on “transition, remembrance, mourning, guilt, loneliness, sex and death, eroticism and dying.” Well, may be viewers have to be in the shoes of senior citizens like Glowna (age 65 when film was released in 2006) to fully appreciate the film.

Based on Yasunari Kawabata's novel of the same title, the movie, obviously an art film, revolves around a lonely man's slow descent to death amidst philosophical diatribes on life with naked nymphets lulled into sleep (hence, the title). Brace yourself with something to wake you up in case the story goes a little ...you know, not to your expectation. As any art film, it has its own meritorious moments.
