If you were a nerd growing up in the 80s this is an awesome book. It covers all genres of nerddom and 80s culture in a fun and interesting read that flows well. Well worth the read.

Immersing himself in a mid-twenty-first-century technological virtual utopia to escape an ugly real world of famine, poverty, and disease, Wade Watts joins an increasingly violent effort to solve a series of puzzles by the virtual world's creator.

Really great book. Loved topic and main character. Very entertaining. Author must be a gamer. His high level of knowledge (at least to a non-gamer) in gaming is amazing. Highly recommend this book. Where can I find a Parzival to fix my computer???

Fantastic book. Good plot, perfect main character, great setting, and good writing. Art3mis is not my favorite as a love interest, but that's just stretching for some criticism. So excited for book two!

The author had a lot of knowledge about the 1980s. I didn’t know most of what he talked about, but I still found the book enjoyable. Anyone who is into video games at all will probably enjoy it. It was a believable dystopian story where everyone is living in a dirty, miserable, ruined world and has all their fun in a virtual world instead. It didn’t glorify the future or the OASIS game. Even though Wade spends almost his entire life in the game, he acknowledges how depressing it all is.

I liked the part on page 16 where Wade says he wishes someone had been honest with him about life.
I liked that the characters were realistic, like the aunt who took Wade in just to get more food vouchers from the government.

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline takes place in the year 2045 when the world is in bad shape. Poverty and unemployment are both at record highs. The protagonist of the story, Wade Watts, lives in a small apartment with an aunt who only keeps him for food vouchers from the government. Wade spends most of his time in the OASIS, an immense virtual world created by James Halliday. When Halliday dies with no relatives, he issues a quest to every user to follow the clues he left and find the so-called “easter egg”. The winner will win his entire fortune, and the clues he leaves are all related to 80’s culture. Wade must work hard to solve the clues before anyone else and judge what extremes he should go to. He must also deal with Innovative Online Industries, a company that will go to any measures to win the contest.
The plot of the story is very well-written and engaging. The adventure from planet to planet in search of the next clue will keep your attention. Another main storyline is Wade’s relationship with Art3mis, another top egg hunter, or gunter, as both debate how far the relationship of the two rivals can go. Similarly, he must balance his time between Art3mis and Aech, his best friend and another one of the best gunters. In addition, Wade must consider how much he should stay away from the real world and immerse himself in the virtual world of the OASIS. This is a recurring theme, as he slowly realizes that there is no alternative to real life. One strange part of the story was the reference to masturbation. I felt this unnecessary and will possibly push away some people. However, it is very short and that is no reason not to read the book. There are also repeated uses of profanity, but it is nothing that a teen will not hear in high school. Overall, Ready Player One is a book that every teen must read and will absolutely enjoy.

It’s 2044, and the only world Wade knows is the OASIS. A virtual world where there’s literally everything anyone could ask for. It’s basically Wade’s home, and Wade has devoted his life and all the time he has in order to solve the puzzles the CEO of OASIS has left for him. Solving the puzzles doesn’t just mean he can escape the “horrible” life he lives in now, but it promises a new world full of fortune and power. And then Wade does it. He solves the first clue. And now big people are coming after him as well as other contenders. The race for the win begins, but to win, Wade might have to face the reality he’s tried so hard to avoid.

One thing I loved in this book was the amazing themes within it. There are themes of home, identity, and so much more. At times I even felt myself relating to some of the circumstances happening to Wade. To think such an unreal, dystopian world could be relatable to the present is so crazy to wrap my head around. Something else to keep in mind is Wade’s personality. He is so strong mentally and it really shows throughout the book. He has a great character development throughout and the relations he comes across is truly memorable and something to definitely learn from.

There aren’t many things to dislike in this book, but one thing was that at times I was a bit confused. That might just be me, but sometimes I felt the plot was moving too quickly for my taste, but I’m honestly just being picky.

If you’re looking for a dystopian novel that will for sure get you thinking more about the present, I would definitely recommend this book.

This book took a few chapters for me to get into. I am not super familiar with 80s culture but once the story got going it didn't matter because the author did a great job of explaining the key aspects that were important. I enjoyed the theme of loving people for their minds and the personal connection you can build, not just the way they look. I enjoyed the narration and look forward to reading the second book!

In a dystopian world ravaged by war, famine, and poverty, the only relief anyone can get from their wreck of a reality is a virtual world called the OASIS. The OASIS was created many years ago by a genius inventor named James Halliday, in an attempt to revamp virtual reality and video games, and to provide salvation to the slowly crumbling society of humans. When he dies at the height of his success, he promises a huge inheritance to whoever first finds an Easter egg he has hidden within the OASIS. In the current year of 2045, 5 years after he released the challenge at his moment of death, nearly the entire world has given up finding the Easter egg, until the main character of the book, Wade Watts, a neglected 18 year old boy who has spent his whole life living in the OASIS, solves the first clue. This book is great because it is filled with mystery, action, and suspense. With many surprising twists to the plot, this book is perfect for people who are looking for a good read with lots of excitement and historical references to video games made in the past. But this book also has lots of terms that people might not recognize, like video game names, references, or movie titles. I recommend this book for people ages 14+. This book contains inappropriate language and violence.

Written with the complete nerd in mind, this book goes from 80's films and music to D&D, anime, MMO's, and everything else in a fast-action geeked-out cyber adventure. It pretty much rocked my world. I'd love to laundry list all of the improbable but amazing things that happen in this book, but the bottom line is this was a YA book that did things I didn't think could happen to me anymore. As an adult reader, I'd given up on books that immerse the reader. I didn't find myself dissecting sentence structure or thinking about the plus and minus of the novel, I just wanted to see what happened next. Even when I knew what was going to happen next, I was excited for it rather than being disappointed by predictability. I still can't quite believe how fun that was.
Not a nerd? It probably won't be as exciting, and some of the in-jokes alone make it worth a read, but hey, try it anyway. Fantastic.
What I really admire is the use of cyberspace to create a novel without limitations. The author truly realizes that in a digital world, anything and everything is possible takes full advantage of it.

This kid is very poor and very alone. Being in this virtual world allows him to escape. He grows up in this society that is falling apart and only wants to find fortune. He stumbles upon his first clue into a puzzle everyone else has given up on. It leads into the most adventurous roller coaster of a lifetime, with plenty of retro 80's to go along with it.

An entertaining read about the 1980's "tech" looking back from 40 years in the future. Pacman, Atari 2600, and Journey are part of a quest through a completely virtual, all-encompassing universe.
