Excellent but only 3 episodes--really foolish of BBC to cancel. The character of Aurelia Zen is so well defined and portrayed--a detective maintaining his moral standards defying all pressures from the "leaders" of the community to do otherwise. He appears to be bending to their "needs" but surprises us by how he turns things around and follows the law. Definitely recommend.

Three 90 minutes crime stories that featured a soft-spoken and very handsome 40 year old detective who lived with his mother in Rome. Besides facing ruthless killers, political corruption and office politics, he was separated with his wife and attracted to a woman at his police station; in English but filmed entirely in Rome with Italian background sights and sounds. Another excellent production of Italian Police crime series was produced by the German TV, Commissario Brunetti iof Venice.

Best movie I've seen in ages. Zen and Tania are both beautiful people (especially Tania in her burgundy silk blouse!) and Zen drives a gorgeous Alpha Romeo 165 station wagon!!! Darn!! - if they were only available in the USA!

Five stars!

I take heart from pipersage's comments that the series may continue. I was looking forward to the series shown recently on BBC and was greatly disappointed that they reran the same three episodes. However, I watched them again and enjoyed them even more having foreknowledge of the plots.

I do agree that the sound quality is lacking in spots making it hard to catch what is being said.

The author has captured the "fine Italian hand' nature of the plots and develops the stories accordingly. Great irony abounds and makes the stories all the more satisfying.

A must see for all lovers of mysteries, police drama and European lifestyle.

Loved it!!! So enjoyable and unpredictable. Because of his reputation for integrity, Zen is always (ironically) selected to do the work the Ministry wants done "quietly". Zen is such a diffident detective, it's hard to see him succeeding at anything. But, no matter what is thrown at him, he always seems to land on his feet. Hugely enjoyable. Would love to watch more of this TV series. Unfortunately, BBC One cancelled the series saying there were enough male crime-fighters on TV, but, thankfully, the show's producers are in talks with other broadcasters about continuing the series elsewhere.

Overproduced and underwritten, but it's all right if you're looking for a few hours of escapism. Zen, a detective in Rome, somehow keeps his integrity - he's known for being clean in a rougish department - while solving three different politically-sensitive crimes in three 90-minute segments. Plus the lead actors speaking English, while the figurants spoke Italian, was very distracting.

In the midst of corruption and crime, Zen somehow manages to achieve both justice and integrity. I really hope there is more of this series.

Really good story - the only downside is that the sound quality is a little iffy. I would suggest putting on the subtitles/closed captioning, so that you don't miss bits of the dialogue.

Rufus Sewell always plays it straight. A refined, nuanced performance - and a wonderful new setting for Canadians to enjoy in this series. Hope it continues
