Published posthumously, Persuasion isn't quite up to the standards of the best Jane Austen, but is still probably far better than anything being written at the time. Austen gives us her usual large cast of characters, connected in various ways in the lower orders of the British aristocracy. Painful regrets form the bulk of the novel's emotional drive, and the suspense is kindled quite admirably in the concluding segments: will love wrongfully spurned be at last fulfilled?

Anne Elliott's road to happiness in marriage took a cruel twist eight years past when a family friend dissuaded her from marrying navy Captain Frederick Wentworth. Now, he's back from Napoleon's war, but can love be rekindled? Every reading of Austen's last novel brings new perspectives and so much pleasure. Her homage to her naval brothers and changing times for English society is fully explored in the excellent annotation.

Persuasion is my favorite Jane Austen novel - a gloomy little study of the pain of missed opportunities. Even though I've read it and know what happens, I'm always in agony until the end.

annotations provide extensive background notes (eg carriages, sea bathing) and definitions of words that are no longer current

illustrations appropriate to the context (eg Byron, map of Bath) are plentiful

a large heavy book very well laid out in parallel columns with good sized print
