I appreciated this material but did not really enjoy it or find the book useful. He talks a lot about the meaning of life but in the end builds the story to apply to the meaning of life FOR OUR EGO rather than for our species or population or individuals as biological beings.

My ego does indeed get a kind of satisfaction or happiness from strong and meaningful connections with other humans. But from the title I thought he was going to talk about WHY, evolutionarily and biologically, that is the case.

Lots of fun, but not much weight, in my opinion.

The author makes some good points, and repeats other good points from complexity science, and I do agree with his idea of deep rationality . . . but his conclusion and worldview [pp. 192--193] are most disappointing, suggesting opinion not based upon prevailing fact.
The denial of Big Brother, or any central-decision makers, is belied and negated by the extensive international network of so-called think tanks [be they the Brookings Institution in America, or the Brookings Institution in China] which create a false consensus by having the same think tank people interviewed on the spread of networks [Fox, CNN, PBS, ABC, CBS, NBC, etc.]. Also, all those contracts handed out from the government [DoD, CIA, NSA, State Department, FBI, et cetera] again forming a false consensus on the Web by hired commenters, and comment-bots, et cetera!
Noticed that the author is on the faculty of Arizona State University, a major recipient of DoD contracts and research!
Just compare the membership of the Cato Institute and Heritage Foundation with the members of Pinochet's administration in Chile, and the membership of Yale's Jackson Institute, and the members of the Hamilton Project located at Brookings, and on and on!
